Unhappy Slowdowns in UT

In areas of heavy action (like 5+ people/bots shooting at each other), the framerate seems to drop to the sub-10fps level. This happens in both D3D and OpenGL(btw, the contrast is wacked in OGL). I had no such problems with my Savage2k, nor do I have slowdown problems with my Voodoo2.

I'm currently using the 7153 beta drivers, but I've also tried the 7075s and they have the same problem(when they work).

Many other games also seem to have strange slowdowns now, especally with particle effects, but UT is my main concern.

Is this a Radeon driver issue or a hardware issue? Or am I just doing something wrong? (and if so how do I undo that wrong?)

Default Question.

Check your INI files, specifically for the game itself. Is UseAGPTextures=yes or something like that present in that form? Could you perhaps post the contents of the DirectX portion of the INI file?

Default What happens...

.. if you disable the Compressed Textures? I've heard that really takes a bite out of the framerate due to the way they eat memory on the card.

You need to set skin detail to medium. For some reason setting it to high will choke down a 32 meg Radeon.

Oh, and you need to disable triplebuffering for the same reason. This in combination to medium skin detail boosted my minimum frame rate by about 15 fps.

Make sure that agp apeture is set at 128 in bios. This frees up a little memory for your card.

I tried everything you guys said, but it didn't help very much. My min FPS in DM-Liandri 1024x768x32 with 15 bots is still about 8fps. With the Savage2000 it was about 30fps(runing with max detail for everything, plus CD2 textures).

However, I also tried 1024x768x16 and for some reason it did not seem to have the slowdown problems(min fps about 30). Unfortunately, the contrast was wacked(like OGL) and it had some horrible banding problems in the menus.

I think I need to find myself a second Voodoo2 (UT rox in Glide).

Default I'm running fine in Liandri with the bots...

... and OpenGL. Haven't tried it with D3D yet, but.. hmm. I'll give it a shot later and let you know how well it goes for me.

UT chokes at 1024x768x32 on my tbird 850....I just run it at 16-bit. I guess I didn't look hard enough because I can't really tell the difference between 32 and 16 bit color in this game unless you stand by a light or something. My LE is at 191/191 with the tweaks enabled. I guess this is the only game that has given my radeon problems in terms of performance...I expected more at 32-bit.

Anyone else try setting 32-bit textures to true? This had no performance impact for me. Maybe there is a bug that keeps them enabled regardless of the setting when running in 32 bit color. That would explain why there's no difference enabling/disabling the setting, and why performance increases in 16 bit, since there really shouldn't be much of a difference on a Radeon.
