www.earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk/

British Geological Survey is unavailable atm. Everyone and their dog must be hitting that server. Radio reports suggest it is nationwide.

Earthquake!!!! AAhggggggg, run for your door frames!!!

Seriously, I just sat there wondering what the hell was going on, was quite violent, the house was shaking, things were creaking, I hope there is no structural damage...

Apparently here in the Midlands *could* be the hardest hit according to early reports.

US Geological Survey on the radio now.

4.7 on the Richter Scale apparently... extremely rare for our part of the world so they say, but there was one at 4.7 in Kent not so long back.

We should expect aftershocks apparently.

earthquakes are fun (as long as they aren't above 6.0)

i was in a 5.7 when i was 11, and a 4.5 about 5 years ago. it was quite entertaining listening to how overblown the media made it out to be...

4.7? That's something to sleep through...

I hope everyone on Rage is doing ok, I know that the nerves can be the worst part of going through a quake.

I've been through 2 minor Earthquakes here in Illinois. We do have a major fault line near St. Louis. In fact it's bigger than the San Andres in California.

THE HIGHEST EARTHQUAKE RISK in the UNITED STATES outside the West Coast is along the New Madrid Fault. Damaging tremors are not as frequent as in California, but when they occur, the destruction covers over more than 20 times the area because of underlying geology.

A DAMAGING EARTHQUAKE in this AREA, 6.0 or greater, occur about every 80 years (the last one in 1895). The results would cause serious damage to schools and masonry buildings from Memphis to St Louis.

A MAJOR EARTHQUAKE in this AREA, 7.5 or greater, happens every 200- 300 years (the last one in 1812). There is a 25% chance by 2040. A New Madrid Fault rupture this size would be felt throughout half the United States and damage 20 states or more. Missouri alone could anticipate losses of at least $6 billion from such an event.

THE GREAT NEW MADRID EARTHQUAKE OF 1811-1812 was actually a series of over 2000 shocks in five months, five of which were 8.0 or more in magnitude. Eighteen of these rang church bells on the Eastern seaboard. The very land itself was destroyed in the Missouri Bootheel, making it unfit even for farmers for many years. It was the largest burst of seismic energy east of the Rocky Mountains in the history of the United States and was several times larger than the San Francisco quake of 1906.
http://www.scchealth.org/docs/ems/do...newMadrid.html

Also, the image below will kind of give you an idea of what can happen:

I myself have never felt a quake (although I'm sure tremors have occurred here in my lifetime but they were too weak to feel). However, a few years before I was born there was one that my parents felt (in the Cincinnati area.... epicenter was probably in another state though). We've got earthquake insurance here anyway.

Yup, New Madrid is a far more dangerous fault system than the San Andreas.

Yes. I understand the physics (damage, etc) behind faultlines. It is not larger. It is potentially more damaging. I once lived in a town where a faultline ran through the middle of it.

Looking back, I dont know why my parents ever lived there. The soil was such a consitency (I dont remember the name of it) that if it was shaken in a rolling style earthquake, it would basically turn to quicksand.

There is much more behind earthquake and damage results than people realize for sure.

Otherwise. It is a smaller faultline landwise (geologically anyway) however the results of a good size tremor could be devastating to that area of the country. Not only is the area older as far as structures, but the land it was built on could be "quicksanded" if shaken correctly during a tremor.

I used to laugh at people in the NW about 4.0s. Stupidly enough, they knew hardly anything of tsunamis and earthquakes at the coast. Makes me wonder whats wrong with people.

Discovery has quite a bit of good information on earthquakes and tsunamis regarding some of the biggest tremors recorded during mankinds history on this planet. Its good stuff to read.

Edit : As well, the San Andreas can cover much more than your "damage" map shows.

That damage map isn't really a fair comparison - the Northridge quake in 1994 was on a previously unknown fault, but was very shallow, thus causing as much damage as it did.
