Completely disagree with this. Foreign language is what allowed me to segue into higher cognition/logic and branch into other areas of science and study (I was a very academically poor student prior to this). It also improved my English speaking and writing abilities although I do have to admit that studying more than just one foreign language is what made me start thinking a lot more abstractly.

Take foreign languages, for example. Most high schoolers spend years studying a foreign language that they never learn to speak with any reasonable level of proficiency. It's an absolute waste of time. It would be better to invest that time learning computer programming or any other useful subject that people will actually use.

There are some subjects that I consider to be "good citizen subjects"... Society is better if people learn history, biology, literature, etc. These subjects make people better citizens, even if they won't use them in their profession. Advanced calculus is not one of them.

Actually though, I think intro-to-statistics would fall into the "good citizen" subjects. The anti-vax movement would evaporate if everyone had a basic foundation in how numbers work and how we count things.

Here's my proposal: Everyone takes math through the first year of algebra, as we do currently. After that, math & engineering-oriented students go onto a traditional math track where they learn each math subject like a ladder. Everyone else is put into a "special topics" math track, where they are introduced to a wide variety of types of math, at least at an intro level. So these students will take 6-week courses in "principles of statistics", "personal finance", "intro to accounting", "fundamentals of economics", "what is calculus?", "how to measure the height of a building with trigonometry", "basics of experimental design", etc. These courses can be taken in any sequence, and will be focused primarily on the principles and purpose of each discipline, rather that mastery in execution.

I took 2 semesters of statistics in college, and that learning has been extremely valuable for me in gradschool and my professional career. I can't remember any of the equations, and I don't remember exactly what a p-value is, but I remember the core concepts like how to count things, how sampling works and how large of samples do you need to achieve certain levels of confidence, margins of error, how to read research conclusions that deal with standard deviations, etc. And all of that stuff was taught in the first few weeks of the class. I really think you could teach high school students at that level, and you could teach that level of depth for a wide assortment of useful math topics... Essentially, I'm talking about turning math into a "good citizen" topic, as a basic understanding of all of these topics will make people better... whereas for most people any further level of mastery is simply a waste of time.

Here's a pic so I don't ruin the thread:
I agree with you so hard. I'm a math teacher and I *wish* that's what I could be spending my time on with students, instead of learning how to switch from cubic meters to cubic centimeters.

Or if it’s COD:MW then it’s a 60Gb update at least once a week. Not really feasible for us folks on capped plans.

I don't necessarily disagree but consider you want to bring back someone that took their own life. Maybe bring back someone that didn't want to die?

Too morbid? Just saying.... the funny left in a hurry...

Maybe bring them back far from the anguish experienced and they reward you with a McRib sandwich in hand? Also a penis implant to your specifications in the other and yes, bobbleheads on the end of a slinky dinky are allowed
