Default NHL 95 on Sega Genesis

After the snoozer that was the AFC Championship game we cleaned out a box of stuff I had packed up since I first moved out of the folks' house today and found, lo and behold, my beloved 16-bit Sega Genesis along with Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, Strider, Thunder Force III and Madden carts, all in original packages with manuals. Man, what I must have been smoking to forget about this...

I was looking forward to re-staging the game on old Madden, but suprisingly the game we spent playing for over four hours was NHL 95. Brilliant. Trash talking, throwing the controllers, hell, we even ordered a pizza. I can't remember the last time I spent that much time on a game that I with a friend, certainly nothing I purchased in the past couple of months. Madden was forgotten.

I guess they *have* to make every sports game a freakin simulation nowadays, but the tradeoff between reality and fun is perfectly fine with this game. Anyone else feel they got it totally right with this game?

The only problem with NHL 95 was the "move laterally across the ice in front of the goalie" trick. You would score every single time. Great game, though.

yeah, we figured that out after ahwile. We couldn't make it work every time though, (especially against richter and the guy from the red wings, can't remember his name) however those goals were regarded as "cheap" by house rules.

The vicious one-timer, however, is an absolute blast to set up and execute. Total in-your-face move.

So- is there another year of Genesis hockey that's better? There's a used game place down the street.......

I have had countless hours of fun in my childhood with NHL '93 for the Genesis. I probably like it the most because it was made in '92, right after my favorite team (the Penguins) had won two Stanley Cup championships in a row, so they have an awesome team in that game , Lemieux, Jagr, Barasso, Francis... Even though there are no one-timers in that game (I believe that it was '94 that saw those introduced), it is very very easy to score on those dumb goalies. And if my memory serves me, NHL '93 was the last one to have blood spill on the ice when someone was badly injured

Midway's Hitz isn't a simulation game. In fact it plays a lot like the old school console hockey games. And much like those games it's only really fun if you play it with a friend.

Thanks for the tip, I'm gonna go see if they have it this week.

What's so awesome is that I can buy just the cart because I know won't need a manual, that's how straightforward this game is. I wish we had more of those.

Just talking about this with some friends this weekend. About all of the old 'good' games. Sure they didn't have top notch graphics, but they had gameplay. We came to the consensus that NHL 95 was easily the best ever for competitive play, PGA Golf 96 fell slightly behind.

Thumbs up

Hell yeah, I loved those NHL hockey games by EA Sports... those were definately the good 'ol days! NHL '93 was probably my fave - they still had fighting in that one, think they removed it in '94.

Me and a couple of friends still take turns playing 1 on 1 NHL 96 on the SNES.

I busted out NHL95 last night after reading this post. It's for PC of course and well under WinXP it aint happening. The installer crashes during the file copy. Guess I'm a have to build a DOS box out of old hardware to get that game going.

ahh the good old days. I've been a fan of the series since it's beginning in the PC. I've spent countless hours playing them all (I think I skipped NHL 94).

And the music, my God, the music! I still have the MP3 collection from NHL 96 till 2000 and regularly hear it (if anyone want's it, PM me - ed2k links).

This thread sure brings back memories.
