I wouldn't be surprised if they bought it back when they move the Expedition over to the new F150 platform in a couple years.

If you buy a Defender at this point, you're a connoisseur of automobiles, and a bad ass.

If I had that kind of change to swing on a toy i'd use infrequently, i'd buy a defender in a heartbeat. Ultimate badassery in 4WD form.

I present thee, the ICON Defender

So, it looks like the Bronco is going to be a real thing in a few years:

Quote:
Will retro ever go out of style? We think not—and based on the teaser image we’ve seen, the 2021 Ford Bronco will have a boxy body that pays tribute to its classic forebears. It won’t be the first off-road SUV to take this design approach: Toyota’s FJ Cruiser wore sheetmetal inspired by FJ40-series Land Cruisers from the ’60s. And, like its muse, the FJ Cruiser had trail-ready hardware to back up its rugged looks. As Ford prepares the new Bronco, here are some lessons from the FJ Cruiser we hope the engineering and design teams have drawn on as they set out to rebuild an icon.

https://www.automobilemag.com/news/2...ta-fj-cruiser/

Quote:
The Ford Bronco is finally coming back next year to enter the (relatively) affordable off-road SUV space largely dominated by Jeep’s Wrangler, and it will headline an eventual family of off-roaders that will include two- and four-door Broncos, a front-drive-based baby Bronco, and—as we reported last summer—a small unibody pickup. The latter two will be revealed soon enough, but for now here’s what we know about Ford’s reborn icon:

Two- and four-door versions will be available, as will rear- and four-wheel drive. According to Automotive News, FoMoCo revealed a two-door Bronco prototype at a shindig last month for top dealers in Palm Beach, Florida, and confirmed to its franchisees that a four-door model is coming, too. The dealers also saw the so-called “baby Bronco” (below) and Ford’s Mustang-inspired EV crossover that will offer 300 miles of range.

Revival of the small off roaders?
Jeep Wrangler gonna get some competish?

We know the Bronco is coming, they have a test mule out there and it looks like its using a Ford Raptor chassis with a shortened wheelbase.

Theres also a new Land Rover Defender coming out as well (mule also exists, I think on a shortened Discovery Sport Chassis?)

Toyota is making interesting products now so I can see them getting in on this at some point...probably not until they get their trucks on the TNGA platform at the earliest (plus the FJ cruiser was kind of big and fat, so maybe they could do something a bit smaller if they go for another shot at the segment?).

Hmm not sure what other manufacturers actually made small off roaders...Suzuki comes to mind, but they're gone from North America. However they do have a small one called the Jimney.

Quote:
Ford fans are ravenous for the return of the Bronco and have been since Ford started teasing the idea of reviving the nameplate back in 2004 with a Bronco concept vehicle. The sturdy SUV started life in the ‘60s and its boxy silhouette is beloved by off-roading fans everywhere. The line ended in 1996 (making it a Radwood staple) to make way for the Ford Expedition.

We don’t know much about the latest incarnation of the Bronco, though we know you will be able to get it with a manual—with a gear specifically meant for ‘crawling’ or low speed off-roading—mated to the same 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-four engine found in the Ford Ranger. It will probable get the same gear box as well. The Bronco will also come brimming with 150 accessory options as it takes on the Jeep Wrangler for dominance among the off-roading crowd. It’s clear from the photo that it will feature bright paint job options and rugged tires ready for rock-crawling.

This little taste should hopefully hold you off until the official unveiling of the Bronco, which Ford set for July 13 after accidentally scheduling the release for O.J. Simpson’s birthday. If you’re waiting for the Baby Bronco aka the Bronco Sport, well, you’ll have to wait a little bit longer, as production of that vehicle was pushed back to September. Automotive News reported that Ford is anticipating first-year sales of up to 200,000 Bronco and Bronco Sport models sold in the first year they’re in production. It’s rare to find a machine perfectly made to both print money and act as a daily-drivable off-roader.

Much more "sport" than "utility". I bet lots of the well to do that consider driving over the lawn as offroad buy it.

It does look pretty sweet though.

That's the 2-door. If you didn't watch the video above, they have a 2-door and a 4-door version.

Quote:
The Bronco, available in both two- and four-door models, starts at $29,995 for a base two-door and $34,695 for the four-door. That setup comes with a 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-four (projected to make 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque) and a seven-speed Getrag manual transmission. Ford likes to call first gear a crawler gear, which, when paired with the optional automatic four-wheel-drive transfer case, delivers a 94.8:1 crawl ratio—similar, actually, to a Wrangler Rubicon. The shift pattern puts that gear, "C", below reverse, to keep it out of the way during daily driving. The manual is only available with the 2.3, which can also be paired with a 10-speed automatic. The optional 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 is slated to make 310 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. So whichever engine you choose, your Bronco is going to be turbocharged.

Not a knock, but just a reminder that the Bronco and Bronco Sport arent built the same.

The Bronco Sport is a bit more "reskinned Escape" than it is the rest of the Bronco lineup being more off-roady.

Ford probably wants to create a "family" so to speak to cover all the bases for Bronco (Rock crawler types would get the offroad oriented Bronco, mall crawler types would get the more softcore Bronco Sport)

If I was a Ford man, this is the SUV I'd get.

tbh I wouldn't say 'hard pass' to any of them. I've always been a fan of the Bronco, and actively shopped for a long time, but could never find a frame that I could justify the cost on.

Enter this line up and I (work remaining steady) can see me owning one for what a ground up restoration would have cost on some of the wrecks I found back then.

Same money, boatloads of improvements, and a warranty These things are sweet.

Well aware. Doesn't change my opinion, as my opinion was formed with that knowledge.

Funny you should ask... I'm not sure yet. The 2-door looks almost like my FJ Cruiser. I'm trying to work through our next vehicle purchase. I had tried to get my wife to look at a new (or "new to her") vehicle and then we could give her current Audi to my daughter but that hasn't worked out. My daughter recently asked if she can have my FJ. If we do that, then I'll need to buy another truck/SUV vehicle for myself so one of these could be in the running. I'll see to see details on towing capacity for the 4-door version.
