klutzon is still being judged by the masses

Exclamation I found out today the Wolfenstein 3D theme song is the unofficial Nazi Theme Song!

I always loved the Wolf3D soundtrack, especially the main menu music, but the theme always stood out in my mind, even as a kid. When I played Return to Castle Wolfenstein a few years ago, I remember coming across a radio on the third level that was playing the Wolf3D main theme, but it had lyrics and it sounded like an old marching song. I remember sitting there for 5 minutes just listening to this song loop, because I was fascinated by it.

Yesterday, I was inspired to get that song out of the RTCW .pak files, and after an hour's search I finally found the song (went through 50 songs before I found the right file). I compared it to my recording of the Wolf3D theme, and they were the same thing! Now I got to thinking, what song was this that iD used as the main theme? I tried looking around, and I stumbled across a Wolf3D fan-site that had the original song available to download. I was so jazzed, I can't tell you!

This is an excerpt about the song from Wiki:

Quote:
The Horst-Wessel-Lied ("Horst Wessel Song"), also known as Die Fahne hoch ("The flag on high", from its opening line), was the anthem of the National Socialist German Workers Party from 1930 to 1945. From 1933 to 1945 it was also part of Germany's national anthem.

The lyrics of the song were composed in 1929 by Horst Wessel, a Nazi activist and local commander of the Nazi militia, the SA, in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain. Wessel was assassinated by a Communist activist in January 1930, and the propaganda apparatus of the Berlin Gauleiter, Dr Joseph Goebbels, made him the leading martyr of the Nazi Movement. The song became the official Song of Consecration (Weihelied) for the Nazi Party, and was extensively used at party functions as well as being sung by the SA during street parades.

When the Nazis came to power in 1933 The Horst-Wessel-Lied was recognised as a national symbol by a law issued on May 19, 1933. Nazi Germany thus had a double anthem, consisting of the first verse of the Deutschlandlied followed by the Horst Wessel-Lied. A regulation attached to a printed version of the Horst Wessel-Lied in 1934 required the right arm to be raised in a "Hitler salute" when the first and fourth verses were sung.

With the fall of the Nazi regime in 1945, the Horst-Wessel-Lied was banned, and both the lyrics and the tune remain illegal in Germany to this day, under the German Criminal Code, sections 86 and 86a.
Here's my recording of the original Wolf3D theme song (in all its Adlib goodness !) :
http://www.f-forge.com/?d=uMjEnL1Hy74QRVfYXtWT

Here's the song that plays in-game in RTCW:
http://www.f-forge.com/?d=AKqWwzT7fGdvIc6V4CXe

Here's an original recording of the full song:
http://www.brlowe.co.uk/wesselhorst.zip

Here are the lyrics:

Quote:

English translation

The flag high! The ranks tightly closed!
SA marches with a firm, courageous pace.
Comrades, shot dead by Red Front and Reaction
March in spirit within our ranks.

Clear the street for the brown battalions
Clear the street for the SA man.
Already millions are looking to the swastika full of hope
The day of freedom and bread is dawning.

For the last time the rollcall has sounded
we are all ready for the fight
Soon Hitler-flags will fly over barricades
The servitude will not last long now.

The flag high! The ranks tightly closed!
SA marches at a firm, courageous pace.
Comrades, shot dead by Red Front and Reaction
March in spirit within our ranks.
And some pics for nostalgia's sake:

I'm sure it's just me who's really jazzed about this discovery, but I'm hoping maybe this'll put a on some of your faces...

Meh, its just a song. I dont think anyone should be threatened by it. I just see it as a piece of history. Besides, the only difference between Die Fahne Hoch and Star Spangled Banner is that they use Hitler instead of God and talk about militia instead of SA. Yes I'm sure I'm going to get hanged for saying that

I'm surprised at the info.

It's not shocking, and it doesn't fr me out, but it's definitely an interesting find.

I agree with neil, most of his topics are interesting.

Anyway, OT.

I remember playing Wolf3D but I must have been 8 years old or something (a little after I played the original Dooms).

It must likely came with the Doom disc... I thought it was some weird Doom actually, I didn't know it was Wolfenstein 3D until now that I see those screens.

Sounds were very very similar to Doom too, from what I remember.

Yeah, old times certainly . But pretty damn fun. I think that during my childhood (like primary school) we installed from the top of my head I remember... Keens, Prince of Persia (the original obviously), some car game which was "semi-3d"... I think it was Lamborghini or something, the spelling version of Mario , Doom and a couple of others. Man... pc class was fun .

I think no game even now has had such scary moments as the original Doom to be honest... It also has to do with the age I played it, it was awesome.
