In agreement with Silent. Play it as an SP game. Most people that I've run into while "grouping" are .. Obscure people. I enjoy the pew pewing and the storyline stuff.

Would be nice to play with someone who's not crazy demanding though. Just like to pew pew.

This is the one MMO that I have paid as much as a retail AAA title.

I haven't played it in a year or two, but really loved it, especially since the plot lines are quasi-canon following the destruction of Romulus in the original/TNG timeline.

I was flying a T6 Fleet Escort with the quad phaser cannons, point defense phaser, and Aegis system.

Well,, i've bought the maingame a few years back, played it since first us-beta but haven't paid a dime for anything after that (and don't intend to change that).

As for the quests, well, if you're a newcomer you can and will enjoy the story arc(s), most quests are kinda chained storywise. Also make sure to check out the user-made stuff, some really outstanding quests are waiting there. However after you've completed the quests things tend to get a bit tedious. You can (and in some cases have to) do quests over and over again with a little cooldown to get some sets and gear up your ships.

Same goes for the "crafting" and of course for the reputation-system.

The good part is that you can set up almost everything to your liking, be it weapons or consoles (both can be upgraded too) or be it personal armor and kits.

As for the missions and the difficulty, not only can you change the difficulty on the fly, you can also change your ship if you want (which is sometimes a very good idea). There is no real penalty for dieing in normal mode and even the penalty in elite mode is more or less laughable.

As said before, take your time, try out a lot of different ships, skill-sets and generally play it as if it was a sp-game. As for the community, well, that depends, it's not toxic like in most other mmo's but the general "tone" gets more aggressive while doing elite-missions, for sure. So, if you're not sure if you're ready for them, simply stay away from them, there's more than enough other stuff to do.

Here's some gameplay footage I recorded a few years ago, to give some idea about how the game plays. Space combat is generally more fun that ground combat, although ground can be alright. These are all recorded on Elite difficulty which really forces you to use all your skills, and focus fire on a single shield facing for the enemy.

My ship wasn't actually that well outfitted when I ran these missions. After getting better equipment it was not quite this much of a challenge, unfortunately. I actually enjoy the greater challenge, so when I go back to the game next I may intentionally only use white gear, and possibly even a lower tier ship, so I can get the most difficulty possible.

Ground Combat

Space Combat

How are you getting this game to run on AMD GPU/Windows 10 systems...if so?

I'm getting some very bothersome nag screens saying that older drivers are detected...lower settings needed....and so forth.

Then, when I do get to the first screen, I don't have my Veteran account and can only see an option to create a new character and then, even on that screen nothing works!!!

I've tried running in Windows 7 compatibility/play as administrator.

And, of course, I'm using the latest drivers.

Hi, I'm sorry this is not the correct topic for my question but I found your name in the DS9: The Fallen topic and don't see a PM option. Do you think you can help me with a problem running the game? I can create a new topic if you want or PM or email. Thanks. Rick.

That ship is sexy

I miss this game but there is so much I need to play in my backlog. No way do I have time for a MMO.

I had left STO for almost 6 years and came back to find crazy new ships, new maps, everything changed, the whole game is WAY better now! I was one of the pre-order original players who also beta tested the game before launch. I was also pre-paid for a year subscription as well, so played out that first year of the game then lost interest.

Almost 6 years later I return to find it's grown WAY cooler! T6 ships are now a thing. First thing I did was buy the Yamato Class Dreadnought and a Fleet Ship Module so I could trade in the module for a Fleet version of the dreadnought. Then, throwing the Yamato skin on the Fleet dread, that is the ship in the above screenshot. Hands down my favorite ship in the game.

I have many other T6 ships now. A Presidio class Tactical Command Battlecruiser, a Endeavor class Tactical Star Cruiser, even the T6 and Fleet versions of the Eclipse Intel Cruiser. But none of them come close to the PvP glory of a AP kitted out Fleet Dread. The above stats picture is a little outdated as the tac slots are now full of vulnerability locators, 4 of em at Mk XIV. Crit hit has gone up since that screenshot to 18.7% chance, so just about every 5th hit I dish out is a crit now.

Is the game still going strong? I haven't played in a few years now. To be honest, even when I played I spent most of the time in the Foundry, but then they screwed that over so people couldn't even find your missions, so...

I did enjoy the game play when I played. In terms of storyline, the game was alright, although I thought it could be better (not bad, but they could have done more with the ST theme, I think). I should come back and give it another play through from the start.

It's gotten a LOT better, even in the 4 months I've been back have watched a steady stream of improvements coming in. They even recently introduced a new weapon class with separate sectioning on ship profiles called Heavy Weapons, normal weapons don't slot in, only the new advanced Heavy Weaps go there and usually a ship only has one slot for it. The first set of ships to use the new slots are escorts, but more ship classes are coming.

The newly added ships since I've been here have been nice as well. The only new ships I am still undecided on are the new super Heavy Dreadnoughts as I think they way overscaled them in size. When a Fleet Dreadnought is barely half the size of a ship's primary dish hull section, that bigger ship is no longer a dreadnought, it is something else. Maybe a flying fortress, but they're too big to be dreadnoughts. Damn things literally dwarf even the Temporal Dreadnoughts which are huge!

A good scale comparison is if you have a Sovereign class assault cruiser pulled up next to one of the new Heavy Dreads, you will feel distinctly like a Star Destroyer parked next to a Super Star Destroyer. THAT kind of scale difference almost.
