Default Online for two players

Just looking for a bit of advice or a few suggestions. I'm wanting to do some online gaming with a friend. She isn't a huge gamer and we wan't something we can play together, not as part of a mess of strangers. Not until we get better anyway. However, most online games these days seem geared toward large numbers rather than the private sessions we want.

So what games are good for two players? Ideally we fancy some co-op though I know options are limited there. I know Doom 3 for example supports mods in that area. Beyond that, there are obviously head to head games like almost any RTS but she is affraid I will beat her too often.

So please, any suggestions for two players, old or new, commercial or free. Just something that won't need a huge number of players to be fun but offers a bit more than the latest Live Messanger offerings.

Well the missus and I had a go at titan quest was quite fun and definatly good in the CO-OP dept. we only droped it after a couple of evnings due to the horrid bugs would cause 1 of us to be kicked every 10 mins.

I'd be intrested my self as well in other suggestions.

If you are playing over the internet? Get Teamspeak and headsets with microphones. It works fantastic. If in the same room? Well then never mind. Here's what I can think of...

Serious Sam 1st and 2nd encounter but they are kinda mindless as first person shooters and she might not like.

No one lives Forever 2. Has chick characters. Plays well. humeruos. Has a 60's spy vibe to it. Complete COOP campain.

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory Coop mode is fun. Requires team work. There are moves only two can do.

Military COOP? - Ghost Recon, SWAT4, Rainbow Six Rouge Spear (probably the best COOP tactical).

All RTS's but specifically Warcraft 3 is fun with 2 players against the computer. So is Warcraft II and it is easier for a new player to learn.

Diablo II over LAN is nice with a friend cause you can make private games and go at your own pace. Nice RPG elements for new player.

Dungeon Siege II but I found it kinda bleh in the combat department as a multiplayer title. Diablo II is more interesting with a friend IMO.

Never Winter Nights 2 I think now has COOP mode and is working well since last patch. Ask at http://nwn2forums.bioware.com/forums...html?forum=109
Needs a ton of hardware though and is still a touch buggy.

Guildwars has tons of RPG content that 2 can do just for the hell of it and on harder quests you can hire minions. That and there is no monthly fee.

If WOW makes you puke like it does me and you want to be around mostly mature people and away from asian gold and loot farmers and bots? Lord of the Rings online has gone over the million subscriber level and watching it for about 15 minutes the other night I though it looked pretty damn pleasant. Just stay grouped the 2 of you and be picky about working with others if you are keeping it intamate. LOTR online does not require mega computer either. AMD A64 3200+ with 7900GS/X1950Pro and up is all you need and it looks nice.

We've got teamspeak thanks. We still have a few bugs to work out but we've just had a blast on R6 Vegas co-op.

NOLF2 is a favourite game but I'd forgotten it had co-op, that will also be one to try thanks.

ROFLMAO.

Anything 2 years old is a dinosaur by "PC GAMING" computer years these days it seems. It's the bain of being a PC gamer. I'm exagerating a little I know.

But really all I mean is you don't need a $2500 computer to run full on at decent resses or a PC that was bought in the last 30 days with the latest video card flagship. Vangaurd or STILL EQ2 and so on.

But lets be honest. A64 3200+ is 3 years old and today the 3500+ costs under $60. Entry Level.
http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/Brand.asp?Brand=1028

The X1950Pro is $130 to $150. Entry level.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814241038

1GB PC3200 RAM is under $80. Entry Level.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820141424

Motherboard for $65

Case and PSU $70.

250GB Hard Drive for $80

CD ROM for $20

ect...

So the fact that you could build a computer for under $600 that can play that game at nearly full settings. That's pretty cool!

I also think Guild Wars might be a good choice. You can basically play duo, or you can group up as needed. Maybe get the new expansion instead of the original so you can have the heroes.

Either by creating smaller servers (2 player servers), or by forming parties or groups in large scale online games should give you exactly this in almost any game.

Of course if the game is designed for many people (like BF2) it may not play nearly as well with 2 players, but any game where you can fight NPCs or on far smaller maps should do it.

This doesn't seem like a new feature or one that any particular game would embody, find any game with online support..... odds are better than 9 in 10 that it offers functionality for 2 players together relatively separate area if not all-together alone.

all of the old baldur's gate/icewind dale series place nice co-op for two people. pretty much any strategy game. I also like Quake 3 arena, but none of my friends are even close to my level, really, so 1v1 isn't much fun.... for them. But you can do 2v2bots or something, if you wanted to do co-op.

I've only been playing since the pre-order packs came out so I'm not an expert beta-tester or anything but my thoughts are:

1. Very good fun for single player. They learned a lesson here from D&DO and let you do what you like.
2. If you find a mission too difficult you can form a temporary "Fellowship" with anyone else you meet. Then you can do it together and share the XP/loot. You only really need to be in a fellowship for the storyline missions.
3. More involved gamers will want to join a "Kinship". These are permanent groups of players who want to remain in contact all the time. You still have to become a fellowship for the missions though.
4. During peak hours it is very hard or impossible to log in (on the European servers anyway).

If you like exploring, Morrowind style, then it's the game for you. There's always something new over the next hill. It's also based on the books not the films so that's a plus. The players are all very polite too. I've not yet met anyone annoying or rude, so I guess they're all still playing WoW.

However, if you intensely dislike the grind of repetitive "kill 10 wolves" missions you may be annoyed with the first weeks of play as all you do is kill 10 of everything you meet.

Well put. I am tempted myself. I have several MMO friends. 3 of which play WOW excessively and 2 with EQ2 hardcore.

Well 2 of the WOW players jumped to LOTR online. They followed some of their guildies over there to the LOTR. Word from some of the remaining WOW members is it's getting less populous for them over at WOW and LOTR is growing very fast. The consensus with these LOTR players are that very few PUNKS have made their way to LOTR and the Asian gold farmers are not comming it seems. LOTR is shaping up to be a good place to be.

Simular rumblings it seems amoung the EQ2 people although there were never near as many punks as WOW. EQ2 is a fairly mature fanbase. But they are leaking poeple into LOTR as well it seems.

Must... resist ... stick with simulations... can't get sucked in again... arrgghhh...
