Default Tips or tricks for fighting in Oblivion?

I was wondering if anyone had any pointers as to how you actually manage to stay alive when there are more than one enemy on the screen. I managed to get through the first Oblivion gate, but those Skamps almost kicked my butt. Now I'm fighting multiples of Daedra and I can't manage to stay alive. Plus I don't know how much damage I'm even doing to them. Sometimes I'll attack and they die with two hits. Other times I'll hit them 14 times and they still manage to kill me.

Just so you know, I'm a Dark Elf under the star of "The Shadow", and my class is "Spellsword". Maybe I picked the wrong stuff, I don't know... but it's really getting frustrating.

I guess I could, but I just thought there'd be something more that I was doing wrong or something. Maybe it is just that simple, but I thought it was at normal difficulty, and I feel like such a noob playing lower than that.

Yer might wanna do some side questing stuff and get them skills up a bit, perhaps find a unique before you square off with the real bad guys.

No, I have a lot of Touch magic spells like Frost and Shock, but I don't have anything called Chillrend. I think I'm gonna do a couple Guild quests and come back to the main ones and see how I fair.

If that doesn't work, then I can always lower the difficulty, but hopefully I won't have to resort to that.

do the quest from the town where you finish the first main quest and you meet jauffre. if you go to the inn you can do a quest where you kill goblins on this guys farm. you get a magical shortsword named chillrend that really helps out in the early going.

Thanks, I'll give that quest a shot. I decided to just go around last night and play some guild quests, and I managed to do the first two assasinations for the brotherhood, which netted me some nice armor and a pretty nice sword.
