Default Google I/O

Anyone watching the liveblogs? Lots of awesomeness coming. Honeycomb 3.1 is launching today for the Xoom, Ice Cream Sandwich is now officially announced and will be a cross platform OS, made for all devices that can run Android, including Google TV.

They also announced a movie rental/purchase system, you can rent movies for as low as $1.99(HD as low as $4.99) and watch them on any of your devices(same with purchased movies).

Coverage is still ongoing but so far there's a LOT of great stuff.

edit: oh yeah, they have a token or something to where if you're somewhere without Internet you can still watch your movie rentals, that's smart.

Google Music, sans actually purchasing music... 20,000 songs in the cloud free while it's in beta, but I'll take Amazon MP3 still methinks.

edit: Looks like new handset guidelines are being made a reality, Google is looking to get rid of any fragmentation that may exist. Lots of handset manufacturers are on board, pretty much all the big hitters. Looks like Google will push updates for them meaning they'll occur in a much more timely manner and handsets will be supported for 18 months after launch, assuming hardware can keep up with Android development. Google is definitely taking control of the platform now.

edit2: stretchable widgets are new with 3.1 as well

They ended with some NFC stuff, some home automation, other kind of boring stuff.

Alphabetical order, all versions are named after a food. I can't find the internal names for 1.0 and 1.1 but starting at 1.5(the 3rd release) they named it Cupcake.

Guess no one really cared...

Google DOES really need to get rid of fragmentation. So many various and OS versions out there it's ridiculous. They seem to be taking notes on Apple and getting control of their platform.

Their next version is Ice Cream Sandwich? Can't wait until you guys crack on another Apple name again...

They are. They announced at Google IO that they will be cooperating with a consortium of handset OEMs and carriers (mostly Open Handset Alliance members) to establish a procedure whereby if you by a handset, it will get the latest Android update for 18 months (from the device's release obviously) so its a step in the righr direction. They are also adding APIs to abstract the hardware configuration (ie. screen resolution, form factor) from the developer making it easier to code once, run everywhere.

And Google gave Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1s to each developer at IO.

Apparently the GT10.1's make the iPad 2 feel obese... Pretty crazy, especially how quickly Samsung got them going.

Exactly. I think the 8.9 inch Galaxy Tab is even better, my personal opinion. Can't for them to come out.

I'm interested in checking out both but I won't be trading in my Xoom until Kal El.

720p Flash videos perform nearly flawlessly now with the Xoom and 3.1 I can't wait until an overclock kernel comes out for 3.1, they'll absolutely be flawless then. 3.1 is actually a huge performance boost overall, everything has improved.

Some more announcements today Chrome OS now has simple in app payments and Google is only taking a 5% cut. Also, Chromebooks are coming! The Chromebook also will come with Hulu and Netflix support There's an education plan that gives Chromebooks for $20/month, I'll be getting one as soon as possible under this plan.

edit: Just tested Bluetooth mouse support on my Xoom, it works awesomely! I may start using this more often.

True, can't see many units being sold over here and nor do I expect many so why should Moto give a toss. Will wait as engadget appear to have some in site saying next few months we should get it lol.

Just saw a new feature with 3.1... The recent apps scroll now, instead of just 5(or 6 in portrait) I've got 14, curious what the limit is now...

Yes, that info wasn't out when I posted that. I'll still likely pick one up, would be perfect for school.

So, overall, the 3.1 update has fixed the occasional sluggishness reported in the reviews for the Xoom ?

I hope so. The problem I have with Android (I had my gf's mom, since she's much too clumsy for an iPhone 4, get an Android device and tried to set it up, along with her cousin and her brother) is that their is way too much inconsistency in the UI's, too many bugs and all 3 of them had a different version of Android. Insane.

Now they wish the would have went with an iPhone 4. Her brother doesn't mind Android but he's much younger and likes to fiddle with things.
