Smile Light Saber game for Wii anounced

George Lucas mentioned to AFP that a light saber game for Wii is on the way. A Wii game where player handle virtually light sabers is in sight.

It's not clear yet if Lucas Arts is meaning the anounced Lego Star Wars or a completely new game.

Sounds interesting, as long as it isn't Lego Star Wars they're talking about. I'm not sure I would like to play that game while wielding the Wiimote like a real lightsaber.

Im wondering how it would work, would be really cool if it was 1:1 but it would be damn hard to impliment.

not really, have the wiimote for the saber action and movement with the nunchuck, could even have some nunchuck gestures for force powers, but keep the wiimote strickly for 1:1 saber action.

1:1 saber motion means people will be cutting their own limbs off. and how slow will laser bolts be for you to be able to block them?

I hope its not lego star wars. I could use another jedi knight game!

Sounds like Star Wars fanatic killer app.

I would like to take a moment though to remember previous videogames that came close or offered something like a virtual light saber simulation in a game where your you actually felt like you were using a light saber with your hands, not your thumbs.

Star Wars Trilogy Arcade by Sega / Lucasarts - 1998 running on Sega's old Model 3 step 2.1 arcade hardware. Although this game is not focused on light saber battles only, the small parts that you do use the light saber prove to be extremely so well done they could have warranted a whole game based on it even with the old limitations the single multipurpose control interface was amazing...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAcg90tC06A

And the light saber duel in the game in the final stage:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sO7B5...elated&search=

Must be a reflex nightmare if there was a fight against Darth Maul made in there.

Final vid is the GT countdown where the game gets in at number 10 in the list.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkX3V-VH5cE

Now for the second entry and one I consider to be almost the prototype of what we will see or be playing on the Nintendo Wii. The Tiger Games Star Wars Lightsaber (wireless) TV Battle Game Plug the training droid into your TV or DVD/VCR and you're ready to play while the Wireless technology lets your lightsaber interact. Move it and slash it in different ways to defeat enemies - and shield yourself.

Now I personally never have played this game but I remember seeing the commercials a year or two ago when this was being advertised and always wanted to try it even thought it was aimed at little kids but I did manage to get some videos that will make that "Star Wars kid" video obsolete.

Here you can see a kid playing from the player point of view so you can almost imagine what may be done with the Wii:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBKsN9omS-0

Here is the website with info on that game:

http://www.hasbro.com/lightsaber/

and screenshots...

http://www.hasbro.com/lightsaber/pl/...dn/default.cfm

There is also the already made Nintendo Wii game, Red Steel, although that game is a FPS with the Wii-mote, it does feature sword fighting and duels:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2oFo9hktPg

Judging from the N-Wii Red Steel game I can theorise that a light saber game using the Wii-mote is not only going to work, it may actually make a good game depending on how people feel about holding the wii-mote but it could be a major killer game if they (Lucasarts) were to do it right.

depends on how much effort they put into coding for the wiimote so it doesnt end up how it did in red steel

Red Steel's sword fighting only has 3-4 moves that are triggered by moving the wiimote accordingly, but not free blade movement as everybody was hoping it had before it came out.
It's not that bad, just doesn't very natural.

I've found the perfect accesory for this game:
Something made of plastic or whatever that hooks up 2 lightsabers (wiimotes) to make it Darth Maul style!

The way I see the whole Red Steel thing is just what is to be expected out of a first generation, third party game using the Wii-mote and that the sword fighting is a minor feature or not a major one as opposed to a theoretical light saber-Jedi knight game.

also since Red Steel is a console FPS while the two games that featured light saber simulated combat in a game do it with alot of limits on what the player can do compared to what a stand alone game would be.

Still the saber kid playing the light saber game looks like he would make mince meat out the the Star Wars kid:
