Question Best air cooling system for x800 pro?

Hi, what VGA cooler would you recommend for an x800 pro? I’ve looked at the Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer rev3 but I don’t think it will fit because it has different power connectors .

I also am looking for a good recommendation. I'll be getting an X800XT as soon as they are available and wonder if there is a better solution than the stock cooler. Especially after reading this bit from the Beyond3D review:

"The cooling of the board resembles that of the Radeon 9800 XT, with the very large fan and ducted copper heatsink, however it isn't exactly the same. As you can see, unlike the 9800 XT's cooling, the X800 heatsink purposefully avoids contact with the memory chips, as GDDR-3 are designed to run cooler than high speed GDDR or GDDR-2 and cooling isn't necessarily required - in fact the heat conducting from the core to a heatsink that touches the RAM could actually heat the modules up more than just having them passively cooled."

I assume the X800 Pro and XT are laid out exactly the same so any recommendation for 1 is good for the other, right?

At the very least, is it still wise to remove the stock HSF, clean the thermal goo off the core and apply some good stuff like Arctic Silver? Or has ATI started using actual grease now and not that horrid epoxy stuff?

EDIT - answered one of my own questions from this bit on HardOCP:

"Something you will notice when looking at the pictures below, both the X800Pro and the X800XT look identical, there isn’t one lick of a difference in appearance. In fact, the boards are exactly the same size as a Radeon 9800XT pictured in comparison below. The new cooler on the X800Pro and XT is actually smaller; it doesn’t need to cool the GDDR3 memory chips."

So, question is would a HSF covering that covers the RAM even be an improvement? What if you just bought some individual ramsinks and left the stock HSF?
Still like to know if ATI still uses epoxy under there so you have to pry the HSF off or is it just grease?

EDIT - ok answered another, from the Hexus review. Clearly ATI is using grease and not epoxy, which is good.

So then, only one question remains, is there a cooler that will actually improve upon stock, given the considerations above? I see the stock HSF actually hovers a bit over the front RAM chips so you really couldn't even put sinks on there without it looking really sloppy. That leaves just the back chips. Starting to just talk myself into sticking with stock HSF here! Any opinions out there?

I use a 1u cooler for my 970NP (in signature) and I'm presuming it runs slightly hotter than a 9800XT (since its voltmodded and overclocked to near enough 9800XT levels). It does a fine job in cooling the core down, and allows plenty of room around it for placement of RAMsinks.

I'm thinking that when I get a X800 I'll put it on....though the Arctic Silver has the advantgae of expelling warm air from the case instead of letting it circulate back into the case...and it allows plenty of clearance above the RAM to put on sinks...which couldn't hurt. In any case I'd definately ram some sinks on the rear RAM chips.

I use a Silencer rev3 on my Club3d vivo softmodded to XT and it worx like a charm.

I didn't like the look of revision 4 - the backing plate for memory aint a great solution imho ....i prefer some ramsinks and a case fan blowing onto them personally.

Yes the rev3 is a 2pin connector vs 3pin on the card ....strip wires and fit into a 3pin connector ....voila!

The rev3 works pretty good ....temps down to 60c-65c load temps core @ 520 but ive stripped my silencer to only use the sink and slapped a 92mm zalman case fan onto it ......copied some other dood on here who did it and worx great - temps lowered another 10c under load ......idle temps are 35c.
Bumped my vcore upto 1.43 also.

Firstly, I was wondering if you have a link to the guide for chanigng that Artic cooler?

Also, I was wondering that, if you disconnect the fan on the X800 does it throw up errors (vaguely, and probably erroneously, remember someone saying at boot it displays a DOs warning about the fan being disconnected)?
Or can you, as with other Radeons, disconnect the fan and not worry about it detecting the absence of its onboard fan?
I just thought that since it seems to actually monitor fan RPM on the X800 stock fans itd throw a wobbly over me removing it in view of a Artic Sivler, or 1u cooler.

just posted by scooby609 in general radeon discussion. felt this is a better place

http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33774328

Direct link that shows they are updating all coolers even the ones for older models and it looks as if they now have a copper base. Whoo Hoo can't wait. They look nice.

You don't really need a guide as such - just remove the plastic case from the silencer so you're just left with the sink and nothing else - install this as normal and whack a fan onto the top of this. You could try and screw a fan into the sink fins - i used araldite to fasten the fan to the sink ....seems to be holding just fine.

Card doesn;t throw a wobbly if the cards fan connector isn't used - it's grateful it finally got some decent cooling

It really is easy to replace the stock HSF with the Silencer. I did mine last night. You can find step by step instructions by typing it in Google.
