Default I May Have Found The Worst PC I've Ever Worked On

So I am really ill right now, can't take any time off from work and I am just drained.

I get a call after work on Monday asking if I can come fix the wireless issue on the computer. Can't connect to the internet. The PC in question

Intel Core 2 Duo
Asus P5B Motherboard
2GB Ram
Windows XP Professional ( It is not a Genuine OS though )

I did not build this PC, the client was referred too me 4 years ago. I told them then that they needed something new, a legit OS atleast but they don't want too. Told them don't do any banking or anything financial on it as its always loaded with virus' everytime I see it. The Virus scan always finds a mysterious way of being disabled or uninstalled if I have too work on it again and of course its not a activated copy of the Windows XP Pro. So the system is 12 years old. I put an Asus AC55 in a year ago when they bought their new house and that's all that has been done too it.

So I get there Tuesday afternoon after work. Turn the PC on go into Windows and the AC55 is detected, but of course theirs spywware to contend with a virus. I clean everything up and swap USB ports. Wireless works, connected to the internet, check Windows Update, update to Chrome ( latest supported by XP ). Restart the PC and hear this

Beeeeeeeep beep beep beep beep

They tell me that its been going on for a month or so but they just it F1 and continue too use the PC. I enter the bios, CPU temp 101c. I think maybe the sensor is gone. So I remove the side pannel, DUST! ****ing DUST! like you wouldn't believe, but the fans still spin. So I grab the vacum and proceed to clean it out. When I come to the stock intel HSF the vacum sucks the HSF right off the motherboard. I've never seen anything like it. Now if you remember the old Socket 775 HSF's from intel you know its just some plastic clips with a peg inbetween them. Those plastic clips are broken off on all put one peg. So I can't fix it, the CPU has actually been running at 101c for over a month.

So they didn't want me to take the PC with me as I had nothing to fix anything with. So I laid the PC on its side, put the HSF back over top of the CPU and turned the PC on, it now idles at 75c LOL.....

They are supposed to bring it too me this weekend as they are headed to the Ukraine for a month. I have an old Corsair H70 I am going to toss in still unopened in its original packaging. Plus I am swapping out the HDD for an SSD and a ledgit copy of Windows 10 Home.

That always pisses me off... damn I can't fix most of your problems in an hour, but I can work on it while doing stuff at my house. Plus most of the time they have shitty internet.

I know about crappy computers as well, my mom's got a pos computer but she'd rather spend her money on cigarettes instead of something decent (you know when a used i5 with an SSD would be enough for something she uses 75% of the day but nooo, she rather have something shitty that causes problems, which somehow end up my problem.

Tell them that whatever they're paying you (if your being paid, which, man I hope you are) would be better spent on buying a new system. If it was in good shape then NP but they're throwing good money after bad.

Exactly... for all the job you're doing + the hardware you're putting it, can't be worth less than 150 $. Used computers here run around 350 tx incl (first gen core i5 + SSD, 3 years warranty)

I was there for 30 minutes on Tuesday night when I realized I couldn't do much more at that time. Made $100 for my trouble.

Last year I told them too just buy a NUC and be done with it. Unfortunately the two 19" VGA 720P monitors make it difficult to switch from since no HDMI.... Don't know why they have two but the company that built the PC for them all those years ago convinced them it was a good buy....

This is not the first time I've done work on a system built by Macrotronics back in the day.

$100 for 30 min isn't bad.

I have a hdmi to vga adapter that does 1080p (and allows for HDCP content on non HDCP monitor) for $30.

Wait, dual VGA... from their crappy MB or an ancient video card?

It's an ANCIENT ATI video card. Hence the problem. On a NUC I can get one HDMI unless they go with the new models released yesterday. But that's more monies...

Lol... Financial planning isn't planned for I guess.

Maybe its sentimental value. I've probably spent too much time in the business of computers to try to figure this out.

Nah, that ain't it.

They are very well off too do. 2 years ago his wife wanted a notebook, I recommended an Asus or MSI, something around $1000 to $1200. We ended up at Best Buy and she bought the $300 special, complains at how slow it is compared to my Surface Book that I have with me on jobs. Yeah, my Surface Book cost me $4000 not $300...

I always tell people when they need recommendations, SSD + 8GB Memory and a NAS or atleast a 1TB backup drive within the system. Does anyone listen? **** no...

I had to do work for Skate Alberta once, went to the Jay Percy Page Centre and looked at their setup. The original director took them for a ride, most of the systems they had documentation weren't even there, the guy had stolen them. Had some stupid server setup with Microsoft Active directory for 4 PC's. All the PC's were running Windows 98 still and this is going back to 2012.... No one even had the login passwords for the server. They had to call South Shore Computer Repair who had the login info but they refused to give it too them...

Yeah I want to put an ssd in my gf's 6300 fx computer but she doesn't want to it pains me to work on non ssd computers lol. At least mine my dad and my best friend has one in it. My friend hasn't had a single issue since I put one in it and swapped out the old gateway fx case to a corsair and put a new pw supply in it.

If they really want to keep the monitors, couldn't they just use DP/DVI to VGA adapters?

I guess it is more money for working on them seeing as how it takes 3 minutes to boot into windows each time.

I can't stand screwing around on a non-ssd computer. I've replaced all that I am responsible for (3 computers and a server at my house, 2 at my parents house, 2 at my in laws house, and one at my sister in laws house).

All said it was the best upgrade they had done in years.
