Default Have X850 - what should be my next upgrade?

I have an old ATI X850 card.

I have $300.

I want DX10 and ability to play FEAR.

What ATI options do I have (or whats the best card I can get for the money I have)?

What nVidia options do I have?

Ati options: No DX10 until 5/14. (hd2900xt)

Nvidia: 8800gts 320mb, 8800gtx 640mb, 8800gtx 768.

What is the res of your monitor you play at?

For $300 though you could only afford the 8800gts 320mb. But if you pal at resolutions over 1440x990 (widescreen) I would save up for some the 8800gtx 640mb

the 320MB GTS is really retarded. For 359 you can get a 640MB GTS which at high resolutions sometimes gets twice the performance of the 320mb version.

Yes, at such high resolutions that you'd need an expensive big monitor to detect the difference at ie. > 1600x *and* with AA + AF on...

As his budget is $300 I'd bet a pound to a penny he's *not* running a large monitor, and therefore the 320mb is absolutely fine.

I'm in the same market for a card as Nutrafrag. I'm thinking of a monitor upgrade (from 12x10) to 1600x1050 and I'm perfectly happy with the benchmarks I've seen of the 320mb version at those res's.

However... The reason I'd wait and see what happens with the HD2900's is cos of various weird problems with the 8800's and their drivers: falling framerates in various games that are fixed by alt-tabbing out to desktop and back again... fog issues in Source engine games... eventually they'll get fixed, I'm sure, but personally I'd like to see what ATI can do before I make the final decision.

IF you have to buy today, the GTS 320mb. If you can wait to see what the prices of the HD 2900 come out like, and how that changes the 8800 series pricing, then you would be better off.

I agree that the 640mb would really only be needed on 1600x1200 res or high, with assloads of AA/AF.

Please, don't ever say 'assloads' again.

I would be concerned about being able to select 'high' textures in many current and future games with the 320mb model. If you could stretch to the 640mb one I would do so.

Keep in mind that the new 2900XT sells for $409 from Newegg at this point. There seems to be some debate about how good the performance is though. The 2900XT seems to be quite a bit better than the GTS, but is a bit worse than the 8800GTX, probably due to driver issues and such.

My advice is to wait a month, then see what the prices are like on the Radeon HD 2900XT, as well as the Geforce 8800 GTS and GTX. This soon after any major release means things will change quickly due to driver fixes.

The Radeon HD 2600 versions may also be nice when they come out in a month or two.

I would go with the 8800 GTS 320MB in a heart beat! I run one, its an eVGA 8800 GTS 320MB and I have a 1680x1050 22in wide monitor and it does just fine. And they can be had for $299 and less if you do some digging.

I have read 5 reveiws so far today and at best I would say the X2900XT is about even with the 8800 GTS. And the GTS is cheaper! But come on telling the guy to wait another month or two!
But if he is like me and he games on a fairly normal sized monitor say upto 1600x1200 and he has $300 to spend theres no reason to wait anymore.
