AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X apparently crushes $20,000 Intel dual Xeon Platinum 8280 CPUs

So, if these benchmarks are real, it means a single AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X chip, which will cost $3,990 (around £3,000, AU$5,700) can outperform a setup with a combined 56 cores and a price of around $20,000 (£15,000, AU$30,000).

Just got a 3 series AMD laptop with a 3700U. Vega graphics integrated. This thing is awesome! Super quick with 12gb of RAM and a 500gb SSD. Wasn't expensive either.

Looking forward to grabbing a 4 series at the end of this year

Haha it's for my girlfriend for school!!

Definitely have the itch to build something AMD though. Just nothing worth the money right now. Hoping 4 series Ryzen changes that. I have no faith in there GPU department at all.

Just got my 3600 set up. Working well so far. Temperatures are a bit high but my case airflow is garbage and I have 4 HDDs heating things up.

When I do eventually replace my aging Haswell based system internals... It's 100% going to be AMD. Ir wants more cores than I really need to game, so I can do more stupid things at once and not worry too much about it and absolutely overkill it when I do need more cores

If you can score a solid deal on a 4770K or 4790K, it will add some real legs to your system.

If I'm lucky I might get one for free due to the nature of my work. But I've been keeping an eye out. If one hits the right price I might jump on one if I see it. This little i5 is hanging strong at 4.2Ghz.

I'm currently experimenting with vcore and clock speed on my 3600. I love the chip's performance but it gets too hot on default settings (75-80C when gaming, 85-90 synthetic ). It's absolutely mad how the clock speed jumps around when just using windows @ 5-10% cpu usage. Intel's boost seemed less jittery on my old 3570k. Here I'm going back and forth from 2200mhz to 4200mhz in the blink of an eye and it's completely unnecessary since nothing is happening. Even with hardware monitoring at 4s, temperature graphs are like a roller coaster.

So far I've learned that if I lock it to 3.6ghz with 1.2vcore, it will run cool and consistent. Maxes at like 70 on full synthetic load, idles at like 40-45. I'll probably stick with this for regular use.

For gaming, sweet spot seems to be 4ghz @ 1.2625 vcore. Not only is it cooler than default (by 5-15c) it actually is about 2-3% faster in some of the quick synthetic tests.

I'm going to play around a bit more and do some proper testing.

Installed a nzxt kraken x63 on Friday with some grizzly kryonaut paste.

With the stock wraith and stock thermal paste the CPU would hit about 71-72c while playing division 2. It had to start ramping up the fan speed at that point to around 85-90%. Strangely enough, it wasn't ridic loud.

Now with the kraken, 140mm fans at 1000rpm and the pump on performance mode, temps hover around 47-48c in the game.
