Indeed, the world's a poorer place today without Mr. Aaron.

The two most legendary sports figures of my childhood (and therefore, my entire life) were Hank Aaron and Muhammad Ali. Ali was flash and dazzle and drama, but Aaron was so solid, and so profoundly good at his game. Both were socially transformative figures for being who they were, when they were.

So much respect for Hank Aaron -- RIP, sir!

Still the home run king in my book with 755, as I don't count Barry Bonds and put a giant asterisk beside his 762 career homers.

R.I.P.

Concur. Bond = juiced d00d hitting juiced baseballs.

It's too bad that what should have been a period of great joy and triumph was regarded by Aaron as one of the worst times of his life. At the peak of the record chase he was getting 3,000 negative letters a day, many with death threats. Because he got close at the end of the '73 season and didn't break the record until the start of the '74 season, he could barely go out in public for the better part of a year.
