Default Why Do Microsft Points/Wii Points Exist?

Why cant they just charge by the countries currency?

Currency issues.

You might as well just open up the market for these cards and have a constant price structure on your side.

PS3 games will inflate/deflate with currency movements, points on the other hand are almost always the same value. Plus, you don't like rebates on cards?

They can set different prices for each country, like Apple do with their TV service.

Rebates dont exist in the UK, infact I dont even know what they are lol.

Its probably some tax code bull**** that makes it cheaper to do points than deal in cash

I think the main reason is so that they charge you 20 bucks once, instead of you spending 20 bucks on a a few themes/DLC/whatever that's anywhere from 1-10 dollars worth of points in a series of several transactions on your credit card.

Everytime they charge a credit card, there's a fee that they pay to the VISA, or whoever, so they can process the payment. I'm sure it's mostly to keep from having to pay one for every $1 theme or gamerpic that's bought. The fee's would add up quickly if they were charged for every single transaction on the marketplace.

It's probably partially the hot dog and hot dog bun thing too, lol. It almost never works out that you can buy the exact number of points for something you want, so you end up with some left over, but not enough to buy something else, so you add more points, and the process repeats.

I figured it was just a sales trick. Points are easier to part with than actually money or something like that. Somehow 199.99 looks better than 200, so maybe points are easier to lose than $?

It is a sales trick. They never sell you the right amount just to buy a particular item, it's always too little or too much.

They always end up selling you more than you need, and then you'll probably just go waste the small remaining amount of something not worthwhile.

MS points this is though.

Using points seems to make it so you don't have to pay tax for some reason so I'm all for it. Or at least it doesnt appear your paying tax.

It's easier to part a customer with fake money than with real money. I think they probably see more impulse buys this way (from customers that load up on points before they know what they'll spend them on).

Yeah this could also be one of the reasons.
Not when you buy them direct from MS on your 360. Or buy them from an online retailer.

Sales pitch and/or possibly simplified form of currency just cuz its the same all over the place as opposed to how many different currency types there are with differing values?

The points are pretty annoying as they never quite fit what I want to buy. I just want to pay straight dough for dlc.
