Game Boy Colors are pretty sought after nowadays, its crazy. And yeah when I find them in the wild they are almost always missing the battery cover.

I was looking into it and apparently it's only come about recently. There is also talk about interfacing a GBA SP ags 101 screen and also the chinese have put out some screens as well.

But I'm not sure I wanna hack into it's giblets since I do have a GBA SP AGS 101 already. I can just play the games on that and spare the GB Color :3

Are there a lot of bootleg DS games out there? I'm trying to find DS games on ebay and there's a lot of them that are "game only" and suspiciously cheap, from China or HK...

Any advice? Should I just get games with original boxes??

I actually haven't done any collecting at all of DS, but I know there are definitely reproduction GBA games so it wouldn't be a stretch to believe it. Repros, even for the cheaper retro Nintendo games have gotten pretty rampant lately since the cost to manufacture them has gotten so cheap especially in Asia

If you're suspicious I would just stick to buying from North American sellers with good feedback rating.

The games I keep from them, yes. The rest of the games I already had or don't want get resold or traded to other retro collectors to recoup my money to get other games I've been wanting. Its why I haven't been doing much PC gaming lately.

Right now I have been playing those PS1/PS2 arcade classic compilation games I got couple week back, and a lot of Sega Genesis and Sega Saturn that I recently got. Some great old shmups for Genesis - Sol Deace, Air Buster, and Arrow Flash. As well as some other great games, Contra Hard Corps and Shadow Dancer that I am currently playing. On an awesome Sega kick at the moment and my PC is collecting dust!

But no, most of those big lots I acquire I do not keep. I need to resell most of it to keep it going.

Haven't updated the thread in a while but here are yard sale and thrift store pickups from the past 3 weeks:

Game Boy Pocket and CIB games I got for $35, Fallout 4 was $4.



From local Salvation Army, nice clean SNES system bundle with Super Mario World for $30. Haven't had a decent score there in months.



Here are my latest local yard sale finds from this past Saturday morning from a few different houses. Everything combined totalled $56. Those two Crucial MX200 SSDs I got for $5 each and they are still sealed in the packaging! They are easily worth over $100 a piece. Really dumbfounded on that one, the lady must have raided her son's computer closet. Best score in a while on those.

Yard sale season around here is finally in full swing. We've been getting a lot of rain here but this last weekend was finally decent weather and i bounced around my area for a good 2 hours. The SSDs made it all worth it.

Haha thanks, yeah reselling the SSDs is going to pay for everything else I'm keeping from last week and probably still profit a bit.

What exactly does your wife have a problem with? The idea of spending money on such things, or such things taking up space in the house?

My wife isn't too happy about it either, but she can't really complain since I generally never actually put any money into it because I resell all stuff I don't need to recoup any money spent, and I keep my entire collection neatly on shelves in a corner of our basement.

a bit of both. To be honest i'm also not sure where to put stuff like that, heck, i've stored all the PS-games in my computer-desk.

I had most of my retro games stored away in boxes for years until in 2015 when I finally bought my current home which most likely will be where I live for the rest of my life. Decided I can finally take them out of the boxes and find a permanent home for them. I built a custom wall mounted shelf unit on the cheap out of poplar wood which I was real happy with, but I think I underestimated how much space I'd need because its already almost full and I still plan to add more games to the collection. In hindsight wish I just spent more and bought a big floor to ceiling unit like this:

Yep, the store-unit you linked has a lot of space but not front cover, so dust will be a real issue soon enough which is why i packed all the stuff and put em into boxes. Also having a cat and a dog doesn't helps at all -.- Last but not least, most of the time the stuff just sits there collecting dust, at least that's my experience. The times you actually use some of it are very very rare.

Its true most of the games just sit there on the shelf. I do play a lot of the games regularly, more so than modern games, but still with the amount of games I have a lot of them don't get touched often. I have no pets though and dust the shelves once every couple of weeks. They stay pretty much dust free.

One alternative is to get some sort of cabinet with drawers to store them in. I've seen some Ikea cabinets that fit games pretty nicely:

Its funny seeing your hauls because I had pretty much all those games and systems. When I was younger my grandfather had a pawn shop and every system and game that came through there and never left became mine. I would never dream of buying the stuff again though for me its just a waste of space.

Dont forget to get a virtual boy if you dont have one yet.

Retro game collections certainly do take up space so if you live in an apartment without a lot of extra space its really tough unless you decide to dedicate a whole room to it. This is why for years all my old stuff was boxed up in storage.

Fortunately for me after buying my current home in 2015 I finally gained the space to display my games for easy access and actually get use out of them. I've got a decent sized finished basement with lots of room to grow the collection too.

And yes I am of course on the lookout for a Virtual Boy but they are insanely rare to come across. I found one guy in the last couple years who was selling his VB collection but he had the complete library of games and was asking a lot for it and would not sell anything separate. Never seen one in the wild at a flea market or yard sale. Nintendo simply did not sell enough units for them to be out there to find.

You're right about that, and same goes for the Crucial SSDs lol.

When I go game hunting I am also on the lookout for anything I can easily flip to recoup money. I'm not rich and rely solely on reselling doubles and anything of value I can find on the cheap to sell off and help fund the hobby.

Fallout 4 was a yard sale pickup for $4. I resold it for $17.

Virtual Boy are rare, although you can get your hands on one without a problem for around 30 bucks, the games though are another Story, some of them sell for above 2k

Unfortunately to get one complete with controller, stand and power cable in decent condition its going to run you closer to the $150-200 range (USD) which is way more than I'm willing to pay for it since it would just be a novelty to me. This is going by current Ebay prices.

Of course the hope is to someday find one at a yard sale or flea market but that's where they are very rare to come across.

Yeah man, the key to finding stuff is consistency. You have to keep checking on a regular basis, often and early. This is especially true for thrift stores.

For yard sales, I know it sounds ridiculous but you need to formulate a good plan. Map out your route efficiently and key is to START EARLY. Also, when you're at the sales just because they don't have anything out doesn't mean they don't have stuff. I'd say the majority of hauls I get are from asking.

My strategy is I will generally ask if they happen to have any old video games for sale they didn't think to bring out. Then I'll start mentioning specific systems, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, etc. You would be amazed at how many times just mentioning the actual systems rings a bell for these people. Often times they might say well yes but I'm not sure if I want to sell it. Then my next strategy is I ask them if they would just bring it out to show me and I'll make an offer, and we can go from there on if you want to sell or not. 9 times out of 10 if they bring it out they will sell it. I picked up a virtual boy for $70 at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo a couple years back, without the stand. I was eventually able to find a new 3rd party stand for ~$25, so it's ok. I only have a few games... frankly I think there's only a few worthwhile games anyway.

Yard sale finds from this morning. Wasn't a lot of sales in my area today, maybe because of Father's Day weekend, but was still able to find some stuff. Finally found a copy of Skyward Sword for cheap. All this for $45.

Here's my recent finds from this past weekend. The Sega Genesis stuff was from someone who contacted me through my in search of games FB post. It also came with the Game Boy Donkey Kong. Got the lot for $45.

The GameCube games and Mario Party 9 were all finds at Savers for $2.99 each. They also had Mario Party 8 there but it was scratched to hell and no manual so I left it. Sucks, I needed that one too.
