dropped the 3600 in, using stock cooler. Temps higher than expected, might be because it's been doing updates and what not, but idles near 50*C, and Cinebench jacked it up to 78*C...

Trying to decide if I need to reseat the heatsink, or if it's all good...

The last couple of bios updates(aqesa) have helped to bring temps down , worth checking your up to date.

Also I find a bit of under volting can bring temps down, though if you bring it down to much your boost clocks drop.

Ryzen 3000 series just runs hot like that. It's partially the smaller process node, but also because it turbos up really aggressively at the smallest background process. Make sure you're on the latest bios update and chipset drivers, which should help a little.

My solution is to just run in Power Saver power plan since it makes the CPU boost less aggressively, and then quickly switch to Balanced using PowerPlanSwitcher when I need more power.

The reality is the vast majority of tasks on a modern PC would do fine running at 1 GHz clock speed, so there's no real need to have your CPU turboing up for them.

yea, I've noticed it is almost *always* turboing. It idles close to 4ghz, rather than 3.6.

my 3800x idles at 32c on full water

I used the stock cooler from my 3800x ( Wraith Prism cooler ) on my old 1800x for a bit and temps on it were higher so tossed it out and put on a Noctua NH-D15 and it runs as cool as on water

and did you use the stock TIM that was on the Wraith Stealth cooler ?

be very careful if you remove the cooler the stock TIM is like glue and people have pulled the chip completely out of the am4 socket

they say to warm the chip up a bit before pulling and rock it a bit

Can I get that Wraith Prism off of you?

I need to get a hold of one and I would like to save one from the dump if I can.

sorry

when I said I tossed it I did in the trash weeks ago when I moved the system to the bike shed

I would go with a much bigger air cooler on your chip
maybe some thing like a noctua nh-d12

the NH-D15 has my 1800x idling at 17c in a 60f shed

More for base line comparisons, not a cooler I'd run 24/7.

Asus just reissued the board with a proper VRM because the old board couldn't handle the heat with the 'Asus' style VRM...

Cheeky...

Turns out those are actually fake.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comment...ing_solutions/

What a strange world we live in that a stock cooler is being counterfeited.

Seriously, the Wraith Prism is not a bad cooler for what it is, but even a $20 tower cooler is marginally better than it.

The wraith prism I just got makes a nice ticking noise right out of the box. Some excellent QC going on here apparently.

I had no intention of upgrading however on Friday I was swapping out a PSU and some case fans when I managed to plug the 8 pin CPU connector into a VGA connector on my PSU. I really have no excuse, I wasn't paying close enough attention to what I was doing. System would power on with fans spun up to 100% and do nothing. By the time I figured out what the hell I had done wrong I'd already bought a B450 motherboard and 3800X and swapped it in.

So now I have a 2700X and X470 system board that is collecting dust for now.

I've been debating getting a 3800x in place of my 2700x using my Crosshair VII hero board. Can you let me know how big of a difference you experience please. Thanks. (If I do get a 3800x, I may get a cheap MSI tomahawk board to put the 2700x in and switch it out with my aged xeon x5675 I am using as my home server).

You really should just save the money and get the 3700X. The only way there could be less difference in performance between the 3700X and the 3800X, is if they just took the same product and put it in both boxes.

I don't need SLI, the other differences are inconsequential for my use case. The x470 and 2700x are going to my nephew next summer. We're putting a system together for him.

Beyond just basic web use and some HTPC I play games at 4K. I'm GPU limited for this.

I can't really tell any difference.

I'd probably not notice a difference either, why I haven't pulled the trigger. Guess if I upgrade it will be either 3900x or 3950x, but then the voice in my head says "Wait for the 4000 series" LOL! .. thanks!

Same here. I'm really tempted to upgrade to either 3700X or 3900X, but I have a feeling I might want to wait for Zen 3 4000 series.

Riptide is still being judged by the masses

Seems like waiting for the next best thing is more useful with CPUs vs. GPUs.

I bought a 2080Ti late in the cycle but at least I saw gains from that over my Radeon 7.

A 2080 To is a decent upgrade for gaming no doubt.

AMD made a bad mistake pushing the VII as a gaming card. It's a compute monster, so doing videos etc... It's beastly.

I think Zen 3 will weld the IPC gains of Zen 2 with letency and bandwidth improvements. The Zen 2 current configuration suffers from pretty nasty latency in the consumer and pro-sumer markets.

Zen 3 will of course get more clocks, more IPC and if they drop memory latency to Zen+ or better will result in some real gains. Also if the IF becomes full duplex, that would be awesome.

Let's look at passmark...

AMD Ryzen 5 2600X 14361pts 217
AMD Ryzen 7 2700X 16937pts 139

AMD Ryzen 5 3600X 20522pts 85
AMD Ryzen 7 3800X 24499pts 48
AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 31961pts 11
AMD Ryzen 9 3950X 35662pts 6

The 3900X is almost 2x as fast as the 2700x in passmark. But in userbenchmark they say the difference is 16-18%, which is almost the same difference between the 3800x and 2700x.

In gaming the 2080ti is 50% faster than the VII according to UB... So... Yeah they can be a little different heh.

VII is 16% faster than the Vega 64
1080ti is 14% faster than the VII
2080ti is 32% faster than the 1080ti

But here's something interesting the best worse range in test scores are...

Vega 64: 108-87%
Radeon VII: 120-108%
GF 1080ti: 145-68%
GF 2080ti: 192-71%

The scores are tied to their ideal 100% score. So there are a lot of systems where the V2 is actually faster than the 2080ti. Like I argued before the V2 is a smoother experience but it chops off the highs to fill in the lows.

Expensive toys don't make a fast box... The tagged slow poke 2080 ti box... I want his motherboard...

Nifty...

depends on your resolution at 1080p or 1440p you will notice it

at 4k ultra settings going from 1800x to a 3800x I got on average 1 to 6 FPS depending on the game with a 2080 ti strix

and some of that maybe the x570 chipset is a little better than the x370

Yeah, I know looking at the benches, the Userbench scores are closer to reality at 1080p, it narrows heavily as the resolution climbs.

Some people do more than game with their pc.

I went ahead and grabbed a 3800x, was on sale for the same price as the 3700x, threw it in my Crosshair vII hero. Bought a cheap MIS B450 tomahawk board, and threw the 2700x in that and switched it out with my xeon 5675 that I use as my plex/file/local host game server. I had 32GB 3200Mhz memory, so I just split it between the two for 16GB each

Why are you throwing your computer parts around?
