My factory overclocked 670 performs almost identical to a 680 for $400. I dont see how a 7970 at +$30 would be an improvement on that.

On a high resolution display with a good oc it would perform considerably better. At 1080, I would go Nvidia though.

7970 still has it's place for over 1080p
I'm thinking nVidia will drop the GTX670 to $379 to compete?

It's a true dual BIOS but one is write protected. so if it goes bad you power off, flip the switch, boot, flip the switch, reflash, and you're back to where you were or whatever.

That seems like ill logic. If the the card is considerably better above 1080, mid to long term wise, you might think it would also be better on 1080, considering future titles.

such a large price gap between the 7770 and 7850. You would think they would offer a 7830 or 7790 or even a 2 GB SKU of the 7770. I think their is a nice market there.

My 7950 hits at least 1050mhz at 1038mv which is apparently the stock voltage on my card.

These non-reference 7950s run a lot cooler than I would have figured while overclocking. For the price you really can't go wrong as long as you don't mind a little overclocking.

I wouldn't buy a reference 7950 though.

Man thats some nice clocks for a 7950 at stock voltage. No reason you shouldnt be able to squeeze at least another 100mhz out of that fairly easily.

It may actually do 1100mhz at stock voltage. It seems stable but I would like to test it a bit more. The nice part about the MSI twin frozor is that 1100mhz is the actual offical limit and the fan profile actually keeps the card cool so I don't even need afterburner to hit those clocks.

Sadly the cooler can't seem to keep up once I start adding voltage. Even with 1100mv it'll get into the 80s and show artifacts at 1200mhz, more voltage just seems to make it happen faster. Makes me wonder what these could do under water.

Cant complain one bit about that, my 7970s only do 1100 at stock voltage. How does it compare so far to the 670/680?

As far as performance from what I've seen so far at 1050mhz its about as fast as a GTX 670 at 1238mhz in Crysis and Metro. In Serious Sam 3 its almost as fast as the two 670s. The 670 is a bit faster in Hard Reset though.

For $330 there is no question which one is the better buy.

I did for about a week. Seemed to work just fine.

I flashed back to a stock Powercolor bios though. Not for any reason of fault though. The GHz bios worked perfectly the entire time.

No, its an MSI 7950 twin frozor. The latest revision is built on a 7970 pcb. For the price you can't go wrong.

Hmm, why you flashed back then?
Also Baba wtf, you bought a 7970? For 330? Didn't read full thread yet...
To avoid any long term consequences. Basically enough people scared me into thinking the added voltage would shorten the life of the cards (it probably won't, at least in how it effects me).

Also, at some point I'll sell these cards (when 8000 series becomes available) and I want them to be stock for sale.

If its being fed added voltage 24/7 it prolly would shorten its life but if u game like i do(2hrs a day at most) gpu is sitting in low power mode for most of the day anyway and depending on the game im playing it might run fine at stock clocks or whatever i can squeeze out on stock voltage. I have 3 afterburner oc profiles setup that ill swap thru depending on what im playing.
