Default 8500 and Windows XP font smoothing

It seems that it's a driver bug that ATI hasn't bother to fix yet...after so many iterations of driver release.

For those with 8500, just go to www.caranddriver.com with standard font smoothing and look left to see what I mean.

Work-arounds are using 16-bit colour desktop or lower acceleration slide by one notch..

It doesn't seem to be a problem on 9500 or 7500 tho.

ClearType doesn't look good to me at all. In fact I hate it.

No it's not website specific, but it has to do with the way 8500 driver smoothes the fonts. The site I gave is just one site that uses "8500-smoothing-incompatible" font.

I agree, this puzzles me why they never fixed it, and I DID submit a report but I read an post somewhere saying that if you don't respond to the form letter, a human may never read it.. so it's possible they have never received our bug reports on this issue.

http://www.pagehosting.co.uk/rf/ is a better url for testing this.. look at the yellow and green text.. now select it with your mouse and see what happens.

Font smoothing works fine on Windows 2000 however.

hehe i know i was unhelpful in my last post.

Tbh the standard font smoothing doesn't look too nice, but this is only on fonts sizing of 14pt in bold and larger.

Having said that Clear type is nicer to look at and kinder on the eyes at higher resolution and looks closer to how the font would look when printed so i like

As for the bug reports ATi will clearly order the fixes on importance and i would be guessing that font smoothing isn't high priority or life threatening.

Same problem here.
I reported it to ATI several times in the past then just gave up and disabled font smoothing.
Catalyst Maker, Sireric, please fix this, is one of the last bugs of the 8500

Oh, I thought I was the only one getting this. It would be great to see this fixed. Right now, I have font smoothing disabled, I don't like Clear type at all, it's too blurry.

I remember having several font issues with my old 8500, with all drivers released in the first 6 months I had it there was font corruption in the windows XP start menu and in most games menus. They fixed it but never completely as there still some issues like taking a screenshot with text in it, text in the screenshot was corrupted. I found this issue very annoying, especially as I'm a web developper so it was embarassing to send screenshots that looks like that to my clients. I'm glad it's fixed in the 9700.

I use clear type on my CRT monitor all the time and it never looks blurry to me....just looks like text without the rough edges

I can't see what you're talking about... I'm using an 8500 with the Omega 3.2's under XP SP1 and 32-bit color.

ClearType is NOT just for LCDs.....it works for CRTs as well....suggest you try it first....
and if you find it blurry, go here:

I have a 9700 and 19" LCD monitor. I had been using standard smoothing but after reading here about "clear" (never tried it) I decided to give it a whirl. Initially (first 10~20 seconds) I was like YUCK! too blurry but after about 60 seconds I began to realize what I was describing as blurry was in fact just ultra soft So I stuck with it. Just wanted to say thanks for the people that posted here about it.

and GREAT link above on the clear font tuning!!

anyone know what kind of performance hit gaming takes by having smooth fonts enabled?? I did read a "tip" somewhere that to improve gaming performance, disable smooth fonts... May have been a Sandra tip but not sure... anyhow, any known numbers on performance hits?

ClearType only looks good on the Jaguar (MacOSX) visual style for XP. At least that is what I think.
Other then on that style I never use ClearType on my CRT.

just moved my LCD over to the r8500 rig with the cat 3.2's on. Set clear type font smoothing and hit the caranddriver link above. I see absolutely no problems.......
