I bet they haven't fixed the network.

I missed the conference.. Did they show the OS in any type of detail?

Ah screw it, pre-ordered. Last time I actually wanted a console on launch was the PS2, which was just impossible. Kept on putting it off, then when I finally decided I would pre-order one it was beyond sold out from everywhere.

Granted, I know pre-ordering hardware doesn't really guarantee anything these days. Hopefully Sony keeps up with demand and/or retailers don't grossly oversell them.

Good article from Forbes...

http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertco...box-one-at-e3/

It would have been enough to let Microsoft dig its own grave, but Sony knocked them out with a shovel and started piling dirt on top of them for good measure. Metaphors aside, the Xbox One faces a very real challenge in trying to come up with selling points as to why it’s a more worthwhile purchase than the PS4.

There are its handful of exclusive titles that Sony doesn’t have like Titanfall, Halo, Gears of War, Dead Rising, and so on, but Sony has just as many worthy exclusives, if not more, on its side. Then there’s the Kinect, and the Xbox One’s TV tuning abilities, but in the end neither adds anything that you can’t do with a cable box and the “input” button on your remote control, items which people already own and don’t cost $500. I’m really stretching my brain here to carefully weigh both sides of the issue, but I simply cannot come up with a logical reason why someone on a limited budget would purchase an Xbox One over a PlayStation 4 this fall given the price and consumer friendly policies of the latter, and the complete disregard for common sense of the former.

All of this isn’t to say that Sony is guaranteed to “win” the next console generation outright. It will certainly have an advantage at launch, but after this fiasco Microsoft may do everything in their power to change the narrative, perhaps even walking back some of these controversial policies at some point, or shooting for an early price cut. And in the long run, I still believe deep down the Kinect has an incredible amount of untapped potential.

Or really, no one could win. Video game consoles face increased entertainment competition now more than ever before with mobile devices and the ever-present shadow of increasingly affordable and popular PC gaming. That said, I don’t subscribe to the idea that consoles are dead or dying. I just think there might be less of them in the future. Microsoft needs to hope the Xbox isn’t one of the first casualties.

There are many lessons to be learned here, the first and foremost being “listen to your customers.” Sony did, Microsoft didn’t, and the result was nothing short of a gut-wrenching fatality, and a flawless victory for the wiser party.

Also a neat video of the new PS4 Eye.

Well not as high tech as the new Kinect, stuff like this is interesting to see.

(although I will admit you won't see me purchasing any of this)

And with the Eye not part of the package nothing will be done with it.

Early reports it was but prob scratched to keep the price lower than XOne.

Kinect was an excellent purchase for my kids.. Got a ton more use than the Wii. Can't wait to see whats built around 2.0.

Yeah, I like it too. Surprisingly, however, the kids prefer the wii to the xbox, even with Kinect. For whatever reason, it just never lived up to expectation - perhaps because they were already used the the wii before we got the 360.

I think the Kinect remains a very good, if expensive, accessory option. Therein lies the problem - its no longer an accessory, and the bundle adds to the console cost. Its not surprising to me that the xbone + kinect bundle hits the $500 mark, especially considering the PS4 + camera hits $460 or whatever. You probably get a lot of value for that extra $40, but no choice in the matter.

What always concerned me is where to put all these accessories. PS Eye, Kinect, Sensor Bar for the Wii....

I only have so much space and having that crap out in the open looks atrocious.

I liked the multi-tasking. Instant in and out of games, saving the game's state and returning to it after doing other tasks seems nice. Managing a download in the background for a game install while playing another game is pretty sweet. Auto app updates and even the ability to remote purchase & push an install down to your PS4 seems pretty handy. The UI looked like a bit of a mess though, but I'm glad they're integrating with social sites like Facebook and external messaging without forcing a single social experience on everyone. The fact that XBOX LIVE acknowledges only its own "Friends" list is pretty myopic.

And that's what it should be in terms of strategy. That was one of the main issues the PS3 had, and one of the reasons the WiiU isn't doing so well either; add-ons like those artificially increase the cost of a console.

The PS3 worked as a trojan horse for the Bluray, included the pointless CELL processors, backwards compatibility, and a ton of other things added on top of it that increased the price; the PS3 actually had far more value than the 360 in terms of bulletpoints, but the customer didn't see it that way. The WiiU has its controller which again increases its cost and makes multiplatform game design tougher.

Not including the eye is the right call for the health of the console as a whole.

Kinect is a functioning part of the system and selling 24million+ units as an add on is impressive.. 2.0 will expand this integration fully into the OS as well as game support expanded..

It's a very cool thing and I look forward to see where it goes now that it's part of every system.

As for the freezing on the PS4 during the conference... thats non existence on the E3 floor. The PS4 playing AC Black Flag is running 60fps. I was floored myself when I played it.

Logical, how is the controller? I hate the ps3 controllers triggers and the light cheap feel to it..

Are these corrected?

The controller is surprisingly light.. Id say its just a tad bit heavier than a DS3 controller. Felt very comfortable too.

As I said earlier (in one of the other countless PS4 threads) I think it was an issue with the capture card, not with the PS4 freezing, due to the fact that the audio kept going and the video was still synced after. It is a shame too, because I think a lot of people probably thought it was the PS4 hardware failing.

So after boning some games on PS4 and XBONE on the floor, which one would you buy? My question only relates to quality of the games and the experience and not about the policies and other feature sets.

They really have spoilt us with the devkit look this time out (PS3 original devkits are 1U rack unit style black stabs of crushing death) which makes the black box seem a bit... meh.

Seriously tempted to mail Sony and say "I'd like a PS4.. but can you do me one in a devkit case please.." ^_^

It is the problem, but it also the solution, The fact EVERY Xbox one has Kinect opens it up to developers to use properly. We don't know what they will be able to do with it yet. They only played with it on the 360.

PS4's will get very poor support. So they are going to be a generation behind on motion/voice tracking.

I'm sure we'll sorely miss the endless stream of dance games and barely interactive titles like Star Wars Kinect.

Oh no, I'm so disappointed.

Oh no, I'm so disappointed.

You don't know what it will be like, full integration could make a massive difference to how it's used.

How would that be the case? Seriously, just because all Xbox's come with it, the devs will now do something so amazing that they never did before for some reason? Why?

Kinect was fun at first, little kids and parents loved the one we setup in store, but actual gamers were just saying meh after five minutes

Because, right now, you can't count on it being there which means any design for games (beyond the party games) will basically bolt the support on for it to tick a box.

Once you can rely on a piece of technology being there you can start to plan around using it more effectively with deeper integration into the game play experiance.
