Default Just bought a clearance Ryzen 9 3900X from Micro Center

They knocked $75 off but they said they don't bench test these things and just put them back out.

I've been building PCs since the 1980's but I have NEVER purchased a returned CPU.

I have 15 days to test it. Any suggestions?

The motherboard is a MSI MEG X570 Ace.

Yes it says that printed right on it that it has full manufacturer warranty. But I'd like a suggested battery of tests. This is replacing an older Ivy Bridge-E that is really suffering from the spectre and meltdown patches.

Id run the usual prime95 and geekbench to stress it.

I put in auto notifs for cpu returns everywhere... 3700x on up... even the 3800x would be ok if theres a rebate for a refurb/return/open box. Bios for x370 is stuck on agesa 1.0.0.2 for now so no manual ocing but I just want the standard cpu perf and boosts.

I figured you would have your CPU by now, Best Buy are usually pretty good at getting it to you in 2 days.

P95 is too much these days with AVX workloads. Easy way to burn the chip into a smoldering pit of fire.

Realbench has AVX but isn't nearly as brutal as P95. I use that for stress-testing.

Well that blows, So their system isn't to be trusted, I actually had a 3900X in my basket for best buy and saw reviews and dropped down to the 3700X as I don't do much productivity on my home PC.

AVX 512 is too much for any cpu right now. Its why they often downclock severely when used. I wouldnt worry about burning a cpu tho on any bench.

Have you ran P95 on a AVX chip? Because if you want to see temps get into the 100s and cause thermal shutdown, then that's how you do it P95 is not a good stress-test anymore. It hasn't been for years. Realbench seems to be what P95 used to be for stress-testing; hardcore, but not in the realm of insanity.

P95 is a good test for VRM, and CPU cooling benchmarks

Kidding, dont use P95. I personally just use Cinebench multiple times and game benchmarks. If it gets through those, who cares.

I dont get why the intel doesnt simply throttle. Im kinda intrigued tho as tho the 1700x can do avx 256 it uses 2 of its 4 avx 128 units to do it and its less intensive than intels 2 x 256. Max temps here have never gone above 65c. The new 3k ryzens do have the same avx 256 units now so am kinda looking forward to see how prime 95 will push the temps on a R3k cpu...

Micro Center in Cincinnati has a boatload now. I put one on reserve as a backup. (they keep reservations for three days) Now I am debating if I even want to test or just go return this and pick up the new one. I cannot build until Friday.

I have a new case with two 360 radiators so six 120mm fans pushing air so I think that should dissipate over 600 watts. Sounds like a fun test. Plus CPUs should be thermal protected right?

I have two of these https://www.xtremerigs.net/2015/02/1...ator-review/5/ But I put them in series so the water pump may not like it. Guess I'll see.

If your machine can't run Prime95 your overclock is not stable. Also, current version allows you to disable AVX, AVX2, and AVX-512 if desired.

You know how many task will hit an overclock as hard as P95?

One.

P95.

To say thats the only way to verify stable is just downright silly. And P95 is not a smart benchmark to use. Period. There is no condition, or need to run your processor that hot, for that long to verify "stable". There is more complex programs that task it just as well to verify stable.

False, but okay. P95 w/ AVX enabled is dumb. Want to thermal throttle/damage your CPU? Go right ahead. Back in the day you would run P95 overnight and that was a great test .. now a days? I'd rather use something like Realbench.

I haven't used P95 since they added AVX and there wasn't an option to disable it at the time. Maybe that's changed, but most of the overclocking world has moved on.

They do. It's an option in the bios. I usually have it enabled and then if an AVX workload overheats the chip it will just clock down. The only issue is if you're trying to stress test you sort of don't want the chip clocking down unnecessarily.

It doesn't matter what cooling you have. The problem is the interface between the CPU die and your cooler. At some point it just can't transfer fast enough and it will overheat regardless.

I've always just stuck with the non-AVX version (the last one before they added it).

Wondering if Derbauer will do direct cooling of the die on R3k maybe using a shim like we did in the old days. Thatd be a cool test to see if the IHS is insulating it too much...
