Could be bad cables. Check your connections.

Composite is the name. You got the names of S-Video, the next step up, and Componant, the next step up after that mixed up. The red and white wires are for the sound, in case you're curious.

It's possible to ruin the tv if you plug things in the wrong way. I got my daughter a new tv a couple years for xmas and my son hooked up his ps2 to it wrong and then the tv was screwed! No idea how it happened though.

Did you recently plug it in and it was black and white?
An svideo cable plugged into a composite adapter will give a black and white picture.
Plugging into a PAL or NTSC TV(opposite of what your system is) can give a black and white picture.
Plugging the yellow cable into a component plug(green) I believe will give black and white.

What brand was the tv? Plugging the composite cables in the wrong ports or even component cables wouldn't ruin the tv ( brands I have tested anyway). Most manuals suggest turning the tv off before plugging in any inputs.
