Not bad, though I think he can spend a bit more and get back to the price point before and keep the cooler. Heck he can drop the proc to the 2500k and save money

If you go sli/xfire with that board the you only get x8, that's really all the important stuff.

Dunno how it is with PCIe 3.0, but x8 on PCIe 2.0 is x16 on PCIe 1.0.

Don't think PCIe will be bottlenecked by even next gen cards, and when looking at comparison charts PCIe 2.0 vs PCIe 1.0 the max difference was a few FPS unless your talking about oldies where fps is 150+

From the asrock website spect something you should note:

2 x PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots (PCIE2/PCIE4: single at x16 (PCIE2) / x8 (PCIE4), or dual at x8 (PCIE2) / x8 (PCIE4)) (PCI Express 3.0 with Intel® Ivy Bridge CPU, PCI Express 2.0 with Intel® Sandy Bridge CPU)

Is needing an Ivy Bridge CPU a requirement for every motherboard or do certain motherboard setups allow for PCI Express 3 functionality when using Sandy Bridge CPUs?

G.Skill dual 4GB kit(8gb) Sniper ram - 1866mhz = $49
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231460

i5 2500k = $219
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115072

Asrock Extreme4 Gen3 = $189
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157264

Corsair H60 = $74
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835181015

$531

As with the Asrocks, they are electrically ready for PCIe 3.0. Ivy Bridge has the PCIe 3.0 controller, so if you drop one in, you get PCIe 3.0.

Thanks I've changed the memory. As for mobo suggestion other than the extra PCI Express slot at 4x a different lan controller and 2 more 6Gb sata connections why would I choose that mobo over the extreme 3.

Good point, I got the extreme 3 for my self because of the price and needs. But the difference is...
-more power phases
-better chipset cooler
-displayport
-firewire
-better lan controller(broadcom vs realtek)
-USB3.0 panel
-more SATA3
-PCIe slot

So it can...
-overclock better
-more i/o
-better at internet
-tri-quad fire/sli

with the extra SATAIII, you can run a raid0 array plus srt caching. Can't do that on the extreme 3.

I wouldn't touch a Marvell sata controller again with a 10 foot pole. They have given me issues on my past two motherboards. One thing that I like about my current board is the option to turn that pos chip off in the bios. USB 3.0 sounds like it could be nice but I don't have any USB3.0 devices and it often comes at the expense of a few pci-e lanes.

Unless you are going for really high clocks sandy bridge doesn't need much power. More isn't always better anyways, notice how the sabertooth and MIVE actually have fewer phases than the P8P67 pro.

One other gripe that I have with those pci-e bridges like NF200 is the added latency and compatibility issues. A xonar dx actually won't run properly on your motherboard due to the plx (I think that its a plx) chip.

So unless you need these features the op my be better off with the extreme 3.

Ditch the I5 with the hydro cooler and get the 2600K 8 threads is better than that cooler by far. You can get the 2600k at Microcenter for 279.00

SB has integrated PCIe 2 lanes, IB has integrated PCIe 3 lanes. Some mobos are now stating support for IB and PCIe 3 when they launch, but we'll see how that works out.

Yep got the Newegg package with the Mobo and Ram Yesterday (CPU and H60 on Wednesday) and I've been banging my head ever since.

As with any new build sometimes you get a dud tucked away in the bunch and my dud this time was the Corsair H60 CPU Cooler
In Windows 7 using RealTemp 3.60 I get an idle temp of 65 Degrees Celsius @ 1.5 GHz if it goes full speed @ 3.30 Ghz my computer hits mid 90's and shuts down. I'm thinking I have a defective pump since checking the pump RPM's in the bios it will fluctuate between N/A and 650 RPM's normal RPM's I am told are around 4200 RPM's. I have already put in for an RMA via the Corsair website so we'll see how it goes. Not being a fan of plastic push pins on the stock heatsink I think I'll try mounting my Xigmatek HDT-S1283 in the mean time.

Well that failed the backplate I got when I did my build in 2008 doesn't really fit with the metal piece on the back of the mobo

I have resorted to using the stock cooler for the time being so let me just reiterate Push Pins on stock intel heat sinks are produced via the bowel movements of the Robot Devil after a visit to Taco Bell!

I hope you get it all fixed up

For some reason my PSU had an issue when I finished setting up my new config and then there is that stupid sleep/awake SSD bug which causes bsod's

I disabled all sleep/hybrid sleep and all that jazz, I'll just manually turn off the monitor when I need to

I have the 2600k with the H80, cools like a beast but you can definitely hear the pump. It's about the only thing I can hear in my system right now, my PSU fan is typically off unless temps/load exceed a certain amount and my video card at idle doesn't really generate much heat (fan is therefore low rpm).

With the H60 I could barely feel the pump trying to work. I sure did pick a hell of a time to build a new rig since I probably won't hear back for Corsair until the 3rd of January

Well at least you have a backup

I had a 650W Corsair PSU sitting around that I am using now but it is a HUGE decrease from my 850. That thing is a work of art, the 650, not bad for a budget PSU but it's just not as refined

I RMA'd earlier today and already have my RMA number so I'll work on getting everything printed out tomorrow and mailed off by Tuesday next week. Hopefully I'll get my new PSU back by the end of the week/early Jan

+1 on hating the push pins! I can't tell you how many of those bastards I went through before I came up with a good way to attach s775 coolers with nuts, bolts and washers. Sad to see them still around. I was shocked to see my 2600k come with basically the exact same cooler as my Core2 chips.

On the cooler, double check your mount if you haven't already. When I first hooked up my H50 it was reading extremely high temps, it turned out I had actually tightened the bolts too tight all the way around and one side of the bracket had bent a little bit causing the surface contact to be uneven. It actually was crushing one side of the block in. Hard lesson learned there to RTFM. Life lesson: Not every bolt needs to be tightened till it can't turn anymore .

Interestingly enough that H50 is still doing a very good job cooling the 2600k.

Can't be the tightness since the were hand tightened and looking at the thermal paste pattern when I pulled it off the cpu it was making good contact noting weird there. The pump was going back and forth between not spinning and 650 RPM's in the bios you would think something that small with a motor that is supposed to run at 4200 RPM's it would vibrate and make a little noise it did neither of these things.

RMA was authorized on the 27th and the defective H60 was sent out shortly after.

Got my new H60 a couple of hours ago and it is installed and running fine I couldn't get any pics snapped Arghuin since my niece was hovering over me bugging the ever loving **** outta me while I was doing the install. Temps are hovering around 24 - 26 degrees Celsius @ idle and hit 345 - 347 degrees Celsius on load with the benches I did. Now I'm on to overclocking. So does anyone have any tips?
