"If you want to get a consistent turbo clock speed out of your new ten-core Intel Comet Lake processor you're going to need some serious cooling. And a monster power supply too, because at peak performance the CPU alone wants to draw 224W. That's higher than the TDP of an Nvidia RTX 2080 graphics card and actually about what we've measured in terms of peak 2080 board power too, which is… a lot even for a desktop processor."

I've seen that on my 9900K at stock clocks.

Only when running Prime95 though. During gaming, I rarely see it go past 100W, nor exceed 60C on an old H100i

They don't run that hot under normal use.

It's fun to joke about, because man...they really push some heat when really cranking away. If you video encode a lot or do rendering, yeah maybe? But in gaming and regular use, it's cool as a cucumber. I've been working from home all day today and it's sitting at 29C right now on an ancient H100i. I've never seen over 60C in gaming, and that's when my office is like 80F.

all well and good that with a good cooler it runs cool

but that 10900 will pump out 25% more heat to the room than a 3950X and most likely 50% more than my 3800X

with just a 3800X and a 2080 ti Strix my 12x15 office can go from 70f to 85f fast gaming with no cooling going in the winter with the heat on in the house

and why i have a second cooler for just my office but i hate heating the house and running a cooler in one room
or having to run both cooling systems in the az summer more than i have to

and this makes me ask why use intel at 4k

Why try and fire up a useless debate? This was just some notes about heat during general use. It's bad enough in the 2080Ti threads, we don't need it in every CPU thread either.

Yea Intel is in for an extremely rough go the next couple years as they struggle to make it through this 10nm disaster, potential loss of Apple and AMD having smartened up.

No, it's a new chipset iirc. I would be VERY weary of the VRMs of just about any board made for older chips. There are few boards built for the 9900K that I would trust with a Comet Lake..
