Default ATI Linux Driver 3.7.1

Ramazz has messaged me that Schneider Digital has new Radeon Linux Drivers for download. Looks like a very minor update.

Fixed in 3.7.1 release:
Added RADEON 9800 XT support

Xfree86 v4.1.0 - Download
Xfree86 v4.2.0 - Download
Xfree86 v4.3.0 - Download

Edit:
This specific release was published a while ago in the ATI website, only to get pulled after a while because it needs a processor with SSE2 support ATI has said that a new driver will be posted shortly.

Interesting this story is, isn't it? or was it the other way around...i have both driver files and they seem identical take few hours on the date they were released...

So this is the way this site presents news? hush hush they pull the non working driver then news is presented to point the other dev team released them, rathter confusing.

Well they should seem similar, the release notes stated 1 change:

"Added RADEON 9800 XT support ".

the one other change people were able to find....Try using the drivers on a system that has an AMD processor or a non-P4 cpu (i.e. a cpu that lacks SSE2).
Then try to startx .
Notice they won't work That's why ati pulled em.
thus they seem identical aside from those 2 changes -g-.

This can't be serious. Two months of waiting and they only add support for 9800. Comon ATI is that all you can do in this time. What about fixing at all those bugs and improving performance. And we are waiting for 64bit drivers for AMD64 for way too long. I'm very dissapointed with this lack of support for Linux.

i suppose that the drivers were really bad and it needs a major overhaul, also i dont know how many ppl are working on linux drivers, but yes 2 months only for a adding a chip id doesnt look to good.

They work fine here on an AMD processor... Or maybe you forgot about Athlon64/Opterons.

All joking aside, though, this abortion of a release really made me sour on ATI. They're taking forever to make/release AMD64 drivers, while NV has released several builds for both WinAMD64 and Linux AMD64.... Ok, that I can forgive/overlook. But now they've cocked up the Linux32 drivers so badly...

I don't know. It's just very hard to speak positively of ATI right now. I do hope their recent success has not gone to their heads.

Well Mtippet (from Ati, who seems to be the lead Linux driver developer) had this to say:
"
Yes, this release has caused some problems, primarily for Athlon users. Most reports are centred around a SIGILL being issued during X startup.

A major build system change compounded by other internal changes allowed this to slip through. Most of the changes where internal and non visible. Yes it has caused some stability problems.

I apologise for the users affected by problems with this release.
"

He went on to say:
"We are working on fixing this and the winex related problem. We should have a minor update within a couple of days. Until then we are warning on our website for Athlon users not to upgrade yet."

And then:
"Okay... Restate Athlon as 'non SSE2 enabled systems'."'

You can read all of that + more on the Linux 3.7.1 driver thread.
They had these drivers posted at www.ati.com but removed them, likely due to this issue.
Perhaps the ones posted at schneider have a fix for the SSE2 problem.
Regardless, htat issue was introduced in 3.7.1.
Aside from that, 3.7.0 and 3.7.1 seem to be identical, lets hope there are actually fixes/improvements in this hotfix driver he said is coming out!

For us AMD users there is not fixes on the above site as the packages are the same.
I have verified this again and again.Just want to save some time to those who might want to try in hopes of getting the X working when using Athlons.

Waiting patiently on the renewed 3.7.1 driver coming next week...

This news posting should be updated so that people are not downloading it if they do not have an SSE2 compatible CPU. It will just cause unwated headaches until the re-release comes out.

*** Do not download version 3.7.1 unless you are SURE you have an SSE2 compatible CPU ***
