Damn... The dude STARTED running when he was 89.

He started running when he was 89 after he lost his wife and his fifth son. That was the way for him to find a new focus and start a new live, he said.

I suspect a large amount of dedication, hard work, and deliberate but effective practice can go a long way towards overcoming the genetic lottery shortcomings.

At least, I ****ing hope so.

Thank you, also what amazing resilience this guy has. Losing his family at 89 and picking himself back up to run marathons at his age?! Dear God.

I don't see how an old guy running has anything to do with genetics, anyone can do it given the right training and lack of limiting health problems. He's running at a brisk walking pace so he's not really killing himself doing it either.

(not saying what he did isn't admirable, just that he's no genetic freak)

I would agree with that, lets say you have very good genetics and you drink like a fish and smoke a pack a day, I am sure that will play a factor on your life span no matter how good your genetics. If I made any sense.

Point being? Most people that age aren't motivated to do that, doesn't mean they are incapable, nor does it proves he's something genetically exceptional.
