That's from our Data Centre where I work I have not been able to find a speed test server that can cope with full Gbps links sadly, so that isn't even representative of the capacity.

how about achieving that from an Australian server though? Any chance you can try some out and let me know what you can reach?

Looks like Comcast recently gave me a stealth 2x download speed increase. Used to be in the 58Mbps range. Upload speed is the same. Today's result:

Looks like this is the best I can do until next year when we get the MAXX upgrades here in Charlotte. Then it should be 300/20.

Wow, Comcast is really getting fast in some areas.

Is that a consistent speed, or just the initial "speed boost," then it slows down?

Consistent. I don't see an initial speed boost, though I think I'm supposed to since I have "blast" service. Meh...

It's my home speed with Cox Communications OKC but I'm using PrivateInternetAccess VPN so it looks like I'm in TX.....

Either way, I'm paying for 100 down 10 up. The VPN lets me scoot by that little restriction.

Still pumping 10/2 on fiber

Cincinnati Bell is launching gigabit on Sept 8th though. Hoping and praying that they upgrade their existing speed tiers for FTTH users.

Dam all you Europeans. I'm sure you are also relatively paying far less then I am for almost double the speed.

Paying $75 a month. Talked them down to $55 for a year since we finally got another ISP in the area. =\

We are reaping the benefits of living in a small country with 9million + people where the importance of internet infrastructure was very early a high priority.
Now decent internet is available if wanted in every part of the country, in Stockholm where i live my building is hooked up to the Stockholm open net where several ISP's offer various fibre internet connections up to 100/100 mbit and phone+tv services.

Google translated so there's a few errors here but you'll get the point:

An open network is open to all.
It is our new infrastructure.

Everyone likes freedom
Welcome to the city network. An open network with full competition on equal terms. A marketplace where you can select the providers and services you want. And when you want to change. This is the users' networks without long lockdowns and periods. With new services and providers that flows all the time.

Competition and Performance
Competition in the open urban networks has contributed to Sweden today has among the world's lowest Internet fees. We are also top in terms of Internet usage and capacity requirements doubled approximately every 18 months. And capacity, we have plenty of in the city network. Fibre optics is the future of network with virtually unlimited capacity. 100 megabits today, 10 gigabit tomorrow and maybe 10 terrabit in 50 years, who knows? Traffic moves at light speed.

Society's new infrastructure
We are interested and motivated to join our entire city to the future of IT networks. We have a new community focus that not only benefits the business and the individual, but makes all our city more attractive to live and work.

The open networks is an important structure for Sweden
Open metro network is available in most communities around the country. The networks are interconnected and work together. They form an important basis and prerequisite for Swedish IT goals for the future. They also represent an important market for local and regional services and services that would never be able to reach out to users unless they open networks existed.

One big problem the US has is population density. In Europe, most people live in a city/town. In the US many people live well outside of the towns so resources have to be spread much thinner. This is not an excuse, the monopolies are also to blame. Still our size does play a role.

You need to check those numbers. A huge part of the US population does not live anywhere near a city/town. I have been all over Europe, and everyone lives in town. We spend resources getting internet to homes that are a mile from their nearest neighbor, and you just don't see people living that way in Europe.
