Missouri has a sub-species of drug court called DWI court. It's usually for low-grade felony DWI offenders who are otherwise facing mandatory minima and multi-year suspensions. It entails ultra-intensive supervision w/ curfews, AA and counseling, and frequent visits to court. If a person gets booted it's almost automatic prison.

A lil duckduckgo search shows at least one county in Texas that has one, but not for those charged with felony DWI's.

When I was 18 my dumb younger self got a DUI. Lost my license for a year, but was able to get a permit to drive to work and back. It cost me well over $10K and that was in the 90s.

I learned my lesson in a hurry, and I was a dumb ass teen. How a grown ass man can't figure that out after the first offense is beyond me.

Long time ago man. Back then the DUI laws here in NC were lax as hell. I got treated just like anyone else. These days though... Bend over boys!

Generally, one of the things I loved about MT was the relatively easy-going attitude not just from the residents but the police.

The drunk driving issue up there is the one thing I think they need to get serious about. It is off the hook ridiculous.

Today is his court day. What are the chances he could get probation for a third DWI? I also know there is a chance he could be arrested today and serve 2-10 years jail time as well.

Did you hear anything yet (I'm assuming he's not at work)?

No he was back at work yesterday. I think his court date was delayed, I didn't directly ask him as it's not really my business but I do remember him saying he was going to delay his actual court date as much as he could until the judge decides to force the issue.

His lawyer said that it is better to delay it as long as possible for some reason, something about more likely to get a more favorable judgement the longer he drags it out.

He did say he has court again next month. That's all I know. He was driving yesterday but he's not driving today so I don't know if he's been suspended or what.

I've heard this quite a lot from lawyers when it comes to cases you're not likely to get dismissed or win at trial. I myself have had a lawyer tell me this for something many years ago and he managed to get the case reduced to a parking ticket because they just wanted it off the docket.

Hope springs eternal. Maybe the cop will screw up and get fired, or disciplined, or ????; or a key witness will get run over by a bus, or (most likely) the prosecutor will leave for another job and the fill-in or new one won't care or will be more of a pushover.

Passage of time is great as it lets memories deteroriate (becoming less of a factor with bodycam videos) but one of the best things about it is the "judge, this happened two (or however many) years ago and there has been no trouble since, he's passed all these drug screens he's taken, he's completed this rehab, etc"

Or it could be that he hasn't paid his lawyer completely and the lawyer knows that once the case is closed the client won't pay him anything else. So the lawyer privately begs the prosecutor to continue the case so he can get paid.
