Default Sapphire 9800NP big prob....

Recently starting last week, w/3.8 AND 3.9 drivers, VPU recovery kept cutting in freezing my mouse and re-starting my monitor. A couple of times it required a hard boot. So I tried 3.7 drivers last nite, and just a few moments ago, it locked up completely and I had to manually reboot. MS gave me a little window that says that it "detected a hardware failure" saying the device was unable to complete a drawing operation.
I've tried the following and it seems I'm running out of options....different drivers, raised AGP voltage 1 notch, scanned for viruses, ran Norton Utilities for system stability (no prob). I havent tried 4X AGP nor disabling fast-writes becuz I feel if thats what fixes it, then whats the point of having this card if it cant run to its full potential?
I can RMA this card and live w/an old 7500 for awhile but I'd rather not....any takers on what I should do here?

> What you should do is: reduce AGP to 4x - the performance difference will not be perceivable to human eyes.

> You should disable fast writes; there is some debate as to whether they even do anything. They are that insignificant - you can sacrifice them.

> You should update your motherboard's BIOS.

> You should check that no other devices are attached to the same chain on your poower supply as the Radeon (HDD etc.).

> How good is your case airflow?

If you can't fix the problem, get a replacement card - what do you mean "live with a 7500"? - Why?

It may just be faulty.

Well I guess I'll try AGP X 4 and disable fast-writes to see if that affects it at all....

I have the latest BIOS for my mobo.....

I'll check on the power supply for the card and make sure its on its own line....

Case temps and CPU are [email protected] [email protected] (depending on room temp)

And lastly, if I RMA this card, it will hafta to be sent away hence I will hafta live with my old 7500 until I get it back or a replacement if nec.

Could be worse....

My 9800 Pro booted into windows the first time, artifacted after 15 seconds, and the screen went black. Now it is on its way to "ATi heaven" in good ol' Markham ON. A moment of silence for our fallen comrade...

OK thats enough. RMA, A-OK! RMA A-OK!

Good luck with your card man...

I should mention this. A friend of mine has a similiar problem to what you are having with his 9800 pro. It would VPU recover when any 3d app is started and revert to software mode. His card was literally next to mine on the shelf at Best buy, so he RMA'd it. If you can't make any progress, there is no other way. I am enjoying some fleeting moments with my beloved 8500LE before I have to give her away to a lesser man. :/

Well last nite no probs and all day today no probs....been surfing, playin games, just letting it run. The unfortunate part is Im not sure exactly what fixed it as I tried two things....uninstalled 3.9, used driver cleaner and put on 3.10....I also went from 8X AGP to 4X.
I guess I could go back to 8X AGP to see but....aaaa wth! Its working good so far.
