Default Texture Preference setting query

Hi, I've tried searching the forums here already (As well as emailng FIC without response & checked via google too), though I've not been able to find an answer to it;

What *exactly* does the "Texture Preference" option for Direct3D & OpenGL do? The Catalyst Help file defines it rather vaguely as "The Texture Preference slider enables you to select the OpenGL texture quality level. Maximize overall OpenGL performance by moving the slider to the left. Enhance overall OpenGL image quality by moving the slider to the right." But exactly how does it work? Does it limit the maximum texture resolution per the 4 available slider settings, or does it modify the texture filtering used when anisotropic filtering isn't active (Trilinear being highest of course), etc.

I'm sure someone around here has to know what this really does in non-vague terms.

Yup checked that post out, I made a request on the site if anyone knew anything about how it worked, though no real luck on that (Though MrG's one of our regulars ). I'm assuming its resolution based after seeing that shot (given the sky looks poor & the wall textures seem the same), though not particularly sure what the best way to determine what each option would define as the maximum then (e.g. high quality might be 1024x1024, high performance 128x128 max then again maybe not).
I mean, someone has to know If not I'll just have to leave it at something like - set this to high quality & adjust texture settings in-game, I'd rather not do that though.

Of course I'd like to know this too I know there are some ATI guys hanging around, it would be nice to hear something if they come by one of these threads.

That's not a good enough answer though. It shouldn't be this hard to get information on it actually does, or how it operates. I can't recall every having such lack of information regarding a settings available on either 3dfx (cough) or NVIDIA Graphics cards.
Should it really be impossible to get any hard detailed information regarding an ATi option on an ATi dedicated forum?

I'm pretty sure it involves settings for things like texture compression and converting 32-bit textures to 16 bit textures, but I don't have details. I actually tried to run some tests using 3dmark 03's Image Quality functions on GT 3, but it seems interaction with the control panel and possibly Rage3D Tweak prevented the values from having an effect as each setting looked the same.

Really, I'm too lazy to reboot for screenshots for each setting right now, so that's all the help I can offer at current.

Looks like 16-bit textures to me with it on Quality... probably has to do with dithering quality levels. But on Quake 3, even the numbers at the bottom of the screen have banding on them... i will be back later to test out my 16bit theory..

Quality looks like it's only doing 16-bit textures, I've got screenshots getting ready to upload to my free webspace, I'll have a link in the next 5 min.

The guy above me got it right Go here for screenshots

Do you have compressed textures enabled in Quake 3?

I just nstalled the game and haven't looked at that... and it appears that it doesn't have texture compression enabled, so I changed in config file, and will test again.

edit: The page is updated again
