Yes, they cheer every customer out of the door on launch day like they just won the lottery.

You know, cult tactics and all...

There's a lot of research to support this. You don't sell products because the customer has a definable actual need that must be addressed, but rather, appeal to the feelings. It's much more profitable to drive a product's brand marketing based on the way the customer will feel when they purchase it, it creates a desire for the feeling and an instinct to purchase the product, without needing to justify it from an actual needs fulfillment perspective.

This is also why people appear to defend their devices and Apple in general to the death, and why a Chinese teen sold a kidney to get an iPad.

Indeed. Same thing with Android or WP8 too. Really anything a person purchases that fulfills or generates an emotional "connection" can prompt the same basic defense mechanism when they feel this purchasing decision is threatened. It's not entirely or completely about the product and the features or merits of the product itself, but rather it becomes oriented towards defending the emotional connection to the purchase. The "facts" don't drive the decision, they're used to defend or attack it but the emotional connection drives the decision.

Usually. I must say I know I'm guilty of this, probably in more ways than I really realize.

Like I said. Sad, sad world.

What ya need is what they sellin
Make you think that buyin is rebellin'
From the theaters to malls on every shore
The thin line between entertainment and war

American eyes, American eyes
View the world through American eyes

This popular consumer crap dominates our minds while we should be collectively solving the problems of our societies. Its just a thing, FFS. Almost like someone wants to distract us and keep us stupid. Makes me sick.

That said, you'd think we'd be used to it by now. Car manufacturers are the elder statesmen of this sort of "You need this to be happy!" advertising, after all...

So you're all saying you'd rather it be like most places, where you go in and spend your hard-earned money, and you don't even get a smile from the cashier? I've shopped places where they can barely be roused to speak to me as I'm buying their wares, and yet this is a big deal to you all?

Oh, wait, this is another bash Apple thread. Hey - ya know what? I've had apple trees at both of the houses I've owned. That must make you people seethe.

Oh, wait, this is another bash Apple thread. Hey - ya know what? I've had apple trees at both of the houses I've owned. That must make you people seethe.
That's exactly what I'd like. Hell I'd rather purchase online than be subjected to forced excitement or smiling. Of course, I'm pretty straight forward when I'm checking out. I don't care about the extra crap...

I feel very little, if any, emotional connections to my electronic devices except for a very small few.

Stuff like in that first picture completely turns me off and makes people look...umm, "special"

It's a phone, nothing terribly special.

I went from a completely crappy flip phone with no functionality at all to a high end smartphone and I feel no need to celebrate

I seriously hope that's parody... If not, that's worse than some of the Dems from 08 and some of the Tea Partiers...
