Default iPhone(s) 3G(s) Unlocking ??

Ok so the wife and I have both moved over to Sprint after nearly 11 years (since Cingular was 1st introduced) and have fulfilled our 2 year contracts for our iPhones (mine a 3G, hers a 3Gs). Now it seems that we are left with 2 paper weights.. can't take them with us to Sprint and from what the Sprint people told us, AT&T can't/won't unlock iPhones. My 3G has been Jailbroken since almost day one to alleviate many of IOS's shortcomings however the wife's phone is still a virgin. The most BestBuy would give he was about $98 and only after sending the phone away and then getting an "appraisal" or some thing.. then said the 3G was "worthless".

I'm guessing that AT&T MUST be able to unlock iPhones (you can buy one outright afterall) and they are just being pricks about not wanting to provide an unlock for her/my iPhone(s). The 3G is no longer update-able (no further iOS updates) and I imagine the 3Gs is close behind approaching EOL. Are there any solutions that don't involve JBing and thus we'd be able to sell 2nd hand in good faith ? Or are we just screwed due to AT&T/Apple though we OWN the devices (paperweights) ?

Carrier lock isn't exclusive to Apple or AT&T

There's tons of unlocking software available on the web, just need to search for one that matches your OS version and baseband.

Nope. Even if you buy it outright it is still locked to AT&T.

Not that you would be able to use it with Sprint anyway.....

AT&T = GSM
Sprint = CDMA

Exactly what he said. I'm not even sure if they would work on T-Mobile since the radio frequency may be different. You're best bet is to find an alternate carrier.

Here is a good resource: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...vice_providers

iphone 3gs still goes for a nice price on ebay, you could try that but you gotta be real careful with registering everything from serial numbers to package weight, lots of scammers out there.

depending on your iOS version and baseband you may still be able to unlock them though, just do a little research on it, my experience from iphone unlocking comes from iOS 3 and it was pretty easy, not sure about iOS 4 versions
