Default 512 MB 800XL a wash on performance...

for a single card. What about two cards in AMR setup? Do you think we will see any substancial gain from 2x512MB vs 2x256MB? Could be interesting

I dont know where you get the "wash of performance"... The additional 256MB yield an increase of maybe 8% at the very best, for example in Doom3 1600 with 6xAA and Ultra Mode. And even then only in specialized maps that use the 500+ MB video data in one single scene.
Just take a look at the updated test of the X800XL 512MB at www.beyond3d.com

The 512MB is mainly a marketing thing and a response to Nvidia bringing out their cards with 512MB.
The only gain I could imagine is with a completely new engine like the UE3 or maybe the HL2 add-on.
But when you really start using 512 and more memory, the card itself - as fast as it is right now - will be too slow to deliver a good gaming experience.
The 512MB is just another step in evolution and just as practical as 256MB on a Radeon 9600...that is not.

I would really hope that people understand that more RAM doesnt always mean more performance.

Just because you can load more textures, etc. into on-card RAM doesnt mean they are going to be processed any faster.

just wondering if anyone has seen a review of this card in resolutions above 1600x1200. i have looked at most of the reviews at 1600x1200 and see little difference except in hl2 at 1600x1200 4aa 16af. was wondering if the added jump in res would push the 256mb cards to hit the page file.

the only performance gain from 256mb to 512mb that I've seen in benchmarks was chronicles of riddick: escape from butcher bay.
Where the 512mb card had almost twice the frames the 256mb one did.
In all other benchmarks I've seen they're pretty much the same performance.

FYI "Wash" means the two are pretty much equal.

No problem, it was obvious that you misunderstood.

Actually ATI came out first with 512MB cards in the Dallas "ATI ULTIMATE LAN" at February 25th-27th this year.
