Default DDR4 is here...

Gonna' be expensive.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...9SIA1YH1RU3682

I'm hoping for a single 32GB DIMM @ DDR4 3200. Figuring $700. Yup. $700 for a single DIMM.

God I'm eager to start my new build.

Seems like a giant waste of money to be an early RAM adopter. What ever floats your boat though.

You're going to pay $700 for a single DIMM of ram.

Yep, confirmed nuts.

$308? That's quite a markup. My Crucial sales rep quoted me $230 for the same item. Also take note, this is technically a server class ECC module, non ECC will be coming out later for much cheaper.

You can expect a 4GB non ecc module to be $50-60 when they are available.

$308??? What a rip off!

Haswell-E did not supported ECC RAM.

You can buy the same 16GB DDR4 ECC memory in Germany much cheaper for €171.96 inc 19% Germany VAT. €144.50 exc VAT, $194.03 after converted exchange rate. 4GB DDR4 ECC cost €56.42 inc 19% Germany VAT, €47.41 exc VAT and $63.66 after converted to US dollar.

When Haswell-E launched, DDR4 memory should be affordable, 16GB Non ECC RAM memory stick would cost around $155.

Didn't realize that was ECC. So maybe I wont be dropping $700 once I start buying the parts for my new build next year.

It's still gonna' be expensive, but oh-so worth it.

Increasing ram speeds rarely bring real world performance gains. In fact, I would say that it's one of the least efficient ways of spending money to speed up a PC.

It used to be, when we didn't have 2GB+ of RAM and SSDs. Today we have both, we have a very memory and storage efficient Windows 8 (Vista was drivekiller-in-progress). It's difficult to make the most out of RAM these days besides hypervisors and file cache, or say ZFS I mean, even if you do run out of disk speed, the swap is so fast on SSDs you probably won't notice it.

I haven't tried that, but I did overload my ESXi server by 5GB+ with swaps to a Samsung SSD (can't remember if it was 830 of 840). Utterly amazing, could barely notice any change in the VMs.

That's a damn good idea, too bad I don't have any empty slots in my server

Oh I remember the days when I won an auction for one of the first sticks of Rambus Memory on Ebay.

Paid a ridiculous sum of money for little to no performance gain.

Will never, ever do that again.

Is really going to be worth it? Do you expect a 10% gain in some apps?

its gonna be worth drooling over, beyond that, 2-3 fps gain in 10% of games.

Pretty sure I'll see far more than a 10% gain coming from this 6 year old beast.

But it won't be the DDR4 alone that accomplishes those gains. i7 920 -> 5960x. BRICKS. WILL. BE. SHAT.

well that's a whole different story.

the actual ram itself I've never seen improve fps more by then 2-3 fps, and even then when you compare cheapest to high end sticks, and in just a few extra demanding titles like crysis or stalker games.

The latencies are high. It'd be better to get CL9 DDR3-1600, which gives you a 5.6ns access time, versus CL15 DDR4-2133 which gives you a 7ns access time. It does depend on the application, though, since the DDR4 will give better bandwidth, but newer DDR3 modules are close to or beyond 2133MHz (with lower latencies), so there's really no reason to get DDR4 at the moment in my opinion.
