Question Rubbing alcohol? Denat. alcohol?

well.....most mods usually require the use of rubbing alcohol to dissolve dirt......and since i dont have rubbing alcohol, i was wondering if i could use denatured alcohol instead...

my bottle of denat. alcohol contains: 95% ethanol and 5% methanol...

and a quick search on google yielded: "Most brands of rubbing alcohol contain approximately 70% isopropyl alcohol...."
(btw, isopropyl alcohol = propanol?? )

so whats the diff if i use denat. instead of rubbing alcohol?
will methanol kill my pcb (but there isnt anything 'organic' in my radeon 8500, right?) ???
could i use ethanol instead of propanol, since both are solvents?

thanks

It shouldn't make a difference. Alcohol is alcohol. They all dissolve dirt since they're all chemically similar. They are all nonpolar and evaporate quickly (the two requirements for getting rid of dirt and working with electronic components).
The only difference is that you can drink ethanol and not the others (which will either kill you or make you blind). That's why they add isopropyl alcohol to ethanol to make rubbing alcohol-because some people are crazy enough to buy ethanol and drink it directly and by doing this, they prevent people from doing this because isopropyl alcohol is poisonous and will kill you.

Alcohol is not alcohol...

Isopropyl alcohol is more properly 2-propanol. This is a completely different compound from both ethanol and methanol.

Furthurmore, isopropyl alchol is almost always dissolved in water. While ethanol, also known as grain alcohol, is often found with water in it (like in vodka), absolute ethanol and denatured alcohol usually have benzene in them, which is used to extract the water. Denatured alcohol also has methanol, commonly known as wood alcohol, in it, to discourage people from drinking it. Methanol is the stuff that will cause you to go blind.

Isopropyl alcohol is rarely mixed with ethanol, because you can drink that.

Any alcohol, if had in quantity, can cause ketosis or acidosis and kill you.

Having said all of this, denatured alcohol is usually a better organic solvent than isopropyl alcohol, as it has no water and is less polar. Most dirt, however, is polar, and would dissolve better in water.

Your best bet, in my opinion, is to use a can of air and a clean, soft cloth.

THANKS SECHS & MAGICKNIGHT0233!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a few queries:

now, what exactly is 'polar'?

how does alcohol cause ketosis? i thought alcohol should be broken down in the liver?

and how does alcohol cause acidosis? it isnt acidic , right?

thanks again

Rubbing Alcohol is usually 70% Isopropyl and 30% water.
But one can usually find 99% Isopropyl Alcohol if they look
around a bit.

You can get 99% or 90% Isopropyl Alcohol if you work in a lab or know someone who does.
