Is the story in this game good enough to carry the weight of the entire game? In other words, I'm not sure if I'll enjoy the gameplay as much, but I'd likely stick to it if the story is really good.

I haven't been able to stay interested in Hideo's Metal Gear Solid stories, but maybe there's hope for this one?

The rain drops performance a bit more, but this is still from the "tutorial island"

My i5-2500k @ 4.4ghz/16gb DDR3/R9 Fury 4gb/WD Red 7200rpm stutters here or there (I only just fired it up until I got control) when the rain/timefall started @ 1080p.

I realize my system is ancient, but my guess is that it's likely my GPU causing the stutter, but I will try moving the game to my 850 evo SSD if anyone can verify using a SSD reduces the stutter.

I'd also say your CPU is possibly a bottleneck too. Check your task manager to see how hard the CPU/GPU is getting hit.

ladders, paths, battery chargers, roads etc etc

They also can't donate materials to roads or whatever you're building etc so basically you're getting 0 help and makes the game much harder.

So the game world is a dumping ground around common path ways.

This game mechanic makes it sound like you don't want to be an early buyer of this game. Let others pave the way for you. Weird.

I read there's one early area or level where you can go in first person view and that you can't do that for the rest of the game. I'm just a tad bit biased, I'd like it first person the whole game. It's the exploration thing, better overall view without the guy blocking any of the scenery.

LOL, that guy is going to get completely eaten by a BT soon. He stomps around like a bull in a china shop. Move slowly and pay attention to what your Odradek is telling you. You have to stop completely if you want to see the BTs. I remember being too scared to actually read the tutorial text on this level. Slow down and pay attention to the help the game gives you. This first encounter the BTs play nice. Next time they run into you it will be harder. If you get caught all hell breaks loose as the BTs will drag you away to fight their boss. If you die in this encounter a voidout occurs that will crater the entire area. Don't ask me why, ask Kojima....

You are correct, sir (also, "Sir") - unfortunately The hiccups are momentary 100% CPU spikes. GPU seems to be getting taxed, but not maxed out at 1080p.

It looks like the best my poor, old P67 Extreme4 can do would be a Ivy Bridge i7-3770K which would be a generation newer than my i5-2500k, add HyperThreading - which could be a plus or minus, and bit more cache. But how good it would be would also be dependent on how good of an overclocker it is as I've been happy with my 4.4ghz until this point. However, I vaguely remember reading that after Sandy Bridge, Intel stopped soldering on their heat spreaders so I'd probably have to look into delidding. For the time being, that seems like a lot of effort for minimal stutter.

Maybe I can just see what this memory usage setting is and boosting that to see if it decreases the hiccups (although, after running the intro again, it seemed much smoother - not sure why but probably because I closed Firefox). It's definitely not game breaking or even that distracting, but I was really hoping to push off building a new PC for another year

My 4770k at 4.5GHz was often CPU bottlenecked in recent games so I don't think a 3770k will help greatly.

From what I read, hell could have been on this forum

The stuttering get's less because it's compiling the shader cache or some ****ery hence why you had it less this time.

HOWEVER, no idea how true that is, as I've had no stutters at all.

Played the prologue - No stuttering for me at all. Game looks absolutely stunning in 4K HDR on my CX OLED. Locked 60fps with DLSS on quality and max in game settings. So much better than the ps4 pro version.

No stuttering here either. Running in 4k w/ DLSS "quality" setting (watch the Digital Foundry review) and max settings. I had some off texture/geometry issues with some objects until I installed the driver from 7/9 (I have a 2080).

I tried the following on my 65" LG CX:

3840x2160 with HDR @ 60Hz/60fps cap
3840x2160 4:2:0 chroma @ 120Hz/120 fps cap

The latter felt nicer (and I wanted to get the most benefit from GSYNC) but the former looked much better.

I wish the 2080 had HDMI 2.1 so that I could run 3840x2160 plus HDR @120Hz/120fps (even if I couldn't accomplish that, as GSYNC would come into play)

Arstechnica updated their article to go into some detail on DLSS vs FidelityFX CAS bit now that the embargo is up. DLSS clearly wins out... but not always in the weirdest spots.

Apparently the game also have issues with gamepad causing massive performance limitation

https://steamcommunity.com/app/11904...4742502433106/

So try to disable steam big picture controller or unplugging your controller if you can play with mkb

For those of you who can, apparently DLSS looks better, and runs better than native resolution.

Hiccups are majorly minimized for me by just closing down any foreground apps, probably because my CPU is just about tapped out. Not closing any background apps and it still plays buttery smooth 99% of the time.

I'm really digging it so far.

I'm not ready to fully start this game proper but I did fire it up tonight to test it out on my PC if anyone's curious about 980 Ti performance. It runs very well for me at 1440p and very high settings. I tried enabling the FidelityFX CAS but I am already locked at 60fps most of the time so I didn't see any benefit to using that feature yet. We'll see how performance goes as I progress through the game.

In that early intro cutscene with a lot of fast action I was seeing some framerate drops to mid 40's and stutters. Normal gameplay is a smooth locked 60 fps though. Seems to just be something about the cutscenes my system is struggling with. If it persists in all cutscenes I'll play with the settings to try to smooth it out.

Glad to see more people get to enjoy this game now on PC. I think you will be surprised by it. I’d join you but Ghosts of Tsushima starts this week. Maybe after that I’ll check it out. Be nice to play on my big 4K monitor. Leave plenty of bridges and ladders behind for me!

As you progress you may want more details on how all the online sharing works. Here is a good link that explains it:

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...ltiplayer-6027

If you do run across something a fellow rager left behind you can set up a Bridge Strand which allows to to share more from that player. Otherwise it is randomish.

So try to disable steam big picture controller or unplugging your controller if you can play with mkb
I use my XBOX One X controller via bluetooth and have not experienced this. I have the Epic Store version (used $10 off coupon)
