That's what retro collecting is all about.

Its been a while since I posted any retro pick ups, but I have still been actively searching even though its become very difficult to find anything.

These game lots are just what I've found locally in thrift stores over the last couple months, and no game here was more than $2.99. I've gotten some Ebay pick ups as well in that time, but I don't count those as "out in the wild" pick ups that are generally more impressive to find and worth showing. This stuff is still out there, just have to actively look.

The GameCube was $9.99.

Nice haul today. This one was from someone who contacted me through my FB post looking for video games, but was actually an old friend from when I was a kid. She sent me the pic and I asked her if she already had a price in mind. She says $200 and I thought for a second to ask if she could go lower but then decided nah, its good enough for me. Few games in this lot I've been wanting for a while, like Axelay. Plus the SNES console is CIB and every game comes with its manual!

Hmm, interesting thread.

I used to do a bit of collecting for PC games from 07-09 about. I came away with some interesting things like, Silent Hill 2, 3 and 4 CIB, Metal Gear Solid 2, Vampire Bloodlines, Call of Cthullu and some others.

Ran out of space/money and got a bigger hard drive. Now I get the occasional boxed copy of a new game, like maybe two in the past three years. I pick up some old PC games at yard sales and the local lib. There just isn't a place to sell these things besides ebay and I hate ebay.

As far as retro console collecting goes.... I was never in the game to begin with. I own a few interesting PSX and PS2 titles, mostly through accident or before prices went up. I'm 100% percent emulation only, even with the original disks. I found an old gensis and PS1 at yard sales and they're going to be resold shortly (yardsale), alongside my old N64 and any N64 games I have lying around. Emulators and Roms all for way for anything nintendo. Disks and emulator for anything else.

Got a decent PS3 collection going but I don't buy to collect I buy to play.

Final note; old emulated games look pretty good on my CRT monitor, sharp but still have an old feel to them.

There's nothing wrong with emulation for old games, especially for the ones that are hard to find or just really expensive. I play most Sega CD and Saturn games on emulators. Another good reason for it is to not wear out the lasers in my aging consoles.

Ah the joy of popping cd/dvd based games into your rigs optical drive and not having to worry about one wrong move or a defect that would carve a groove into your collection of games

Its part of why I love my PS3, Blu Rays are far harder to scratch.

In addition, less cords and total control over which controller I use. I even managed to set up my ps3 controller to use native ps2 controls on some emulated PS2 games. Very nice indeed. (N64 controller sucked mario balls)

So I was playing around with my CRT monitor (computer monitor) and I figured out how to run it in 240p mode, by putting in a custom resolution, setting the refresh to 120hz and selecting CVT timing. Interesting results, especially with the few SNES games I like to sample every now and then. (super metroid is fun and I've never played any metroid) N64 games look pretty good at 480p, not perfectly like I've seen the N64 run in real life.

The big benefit I've seen lately is with my PS3 on the CRT. A $30 HDMI to VGA adapter (strips out HDCP) and perfect sharpness on all of the 720p titles. 1080p will display but badly out of range with massive overscan. I'll probably try it out with the old CRT I gave my GF a few years ago at some point, see if I can get 1080p to go. (Another 21 trinitron. I picked up a like 5 from 07 to 13, kept the best and gave the second best to my girl)

Man I'll never forget the time way back in the mid 90's when I hooked an N64 up to a CRT monitor that had Composite jacks. Compared to the CRT tv we had at the time I got ass blasted by how good Super Mario 64 looked.

Speaking of brute forcing things. I component modded 1 of my snes consoles and lawdy that looks pretty spiffy on a 46inch tv in 4:3 mode or 16:9.

Tis kinda jank though and I've been procrastinating on updating it since I need to add capacitors to stop it from jamming 3 volts though the connectors.

Soon™

New OfferUp score today. Asking price on this N64 lot was $130 and the listing was up for 24 minutes when I saw it, I didn't bother trying to offer less. Notice the heavy-hitter in the bottom left.

Funny part is, after I sent my offer I messaged the seller to let them know I could meet today ASAP and she replied back "sorry I can't do $100, my price is $130 firm." Someone actually messaged her right before me trying to get it for $100 and she accidently sent the reply intended for the other buyer to me. I confirmed this with her when I met her. Apparently I was the second person to contact her and luckily I offered her asking price!

Conker's bad fur day is a heavy hitter? I'll boot it up this weekend to see if its the gameplay or content.... Still, wow has the N64 become a collectors thing, for a system without a usable controller, amazing.

Yard sales and library sale this weekend. Going to be on the lookout for PS3 games (of course), cheap psx of interest and maybe the odd PC game, maybe. I'll post what I get here.

By heavy-hitter I mean a valuable game for the platform. In the N64 library its probably the most valuable game currently that is not considered "rare." Its still a relatively common game yet the price keeps climbing for it. Just very sought after.

And yes, the N64 is probably the hottest Nintendo platform to collect for at the moment. It all goes by age of the system, and when players who were kids when it was released are now in their 30's. Around that age is when people seem to want to start rebuying the games they had as a kid. Next up will be the Gamecube, which is also starting to heat up.

Yeah it makes sense. Maybe its because I'm a few years younger than many of the N64 collectors i don't see it. I could dump my n64 (lost the power adapter lol) and my games for $30.

I do wonder how much collectors actually play their retro games. I might load up a rom once a week, while I'm sure that there are some that retro game exclusively.

I do wonder how much collectors actually play their retro games. I might load up a rom once a week, while I'm sure that there are some that retro game exclusively.
There are definitely people who are strictly collectors, that hardly ever play their games. This is not me. I am primarily a gamer, and collector second. I just like playing on the original carts and consoles. Unless the game is too expensive or hard to find, then I will emulate.

Lately I have been playing retro games exclusively, all except for the new Zelda game. I honestly haven't touched my PC for gaming in months, and I don't own any of the new gen consoles. Honestly all the crap with modern console gaming is a huge turn off for me. I like to just pop a game in and be right in the action within seconds, and the simplified "gameplay first" type games of the old days just suits me better nowadays when I just don't have a lot of time to play.

Where are you located? If you're in North American maybe we can make a deal for your N64 stuff?

The wonderful Garden state sir.

I'll have to go through what I have this weekend. Helping my mom clean out stuff at the parents.

You're relatively close to me then.

Well if you are thinking of selling your old stuff, please consider giving me a chance to make you an offer. Or if you already have a price in mind let me know. Feel free to PM me some pics of what you have when you get the chance.

This score last night came from a response to my in search of games post on a local Facebook buy/sell group. Big lot of mostly common PS1/PS2 and NES, and one semi-rare NES game. Paid $150 for the lot.

So I found all of the old N64 stuff.

Perfect Dark
ocarina of time (with anicent gamestop sticker and marker writing lol)
silly game guide in pretty bad condition. got a lot of love
1080
Star Fox
NFL Blitz
A gray, clear purple and a broken clear green controller (right into the trash it went, the joysticks are simply shitty design all around)
The system, expansion pack, the original "jump pack" and the little tool to remove them
Somehow we never tossed out the stupid box it came with. The whole cardboard box. I never knew the attic was so big.
I have a feeling that my brother traded in a lot of our games during the xbox 360 purchase in 06. No great loss.
Still have hope of finding my copy of smash bros, as I did still have it in college.

Also found a sega gensis with a few games, like sonic pinball, nba jam, streets of rage, a football game, a soccer game and all of the damn plastic boxes.

Stole back my copy of Metal Slug anthology and Fallout Brotherhood of Steel from my bro too.

Pics will come after I test this stuff. It worked back in 09 when I salvaged a pretty nice old sony tv and setup a game corner for one summer.

Always cool to find old gaming stuff.

Clean the cartridge pins before you test them. Isopropyl alcohol and q-tips.

I will do, thanks for the tip. (pun intended) Thoughts on cleaning the slot inside of the N64 and Genesis?

What i like to do is first blow out any loose dust with compressed air, then with the power unplugged wrap a credit card with a single layer of paper towel damp with iso alcohol and insert it in and out of the cartridge slot a few times. After that just blow somemore air in to dry it out. Does the job good enough.
