I will say this for palm... they probably have a better shot at this than most due, as they have a good understanding of the mobile market, and in particular, the importance of low power consumption.

"the device plays full-motion video in a number of formats as well as music in MP3 format. It will ship with a photo viewer"

Sounds cool, what are they going to call it, "Helix: Porn-anywhere"?

It has built in Bluetooth for wireless gaming with your buds!

This thing seems like it could be pretty slick.

Default GBA SP Specs for comparison

Does anyone know which arm processor the gba uses? This thing is a beast compared to the gba. It has twice the resolution, much more powerful graphics hardware and cpu (I believe), bluetooth, and rumble. It also has two lithium batteries which it will probably need to offer comparable battery life)... and in fact, I'd say it has specs very similar to what we'd expect in the gba's successor, which won't be seen for a couple of years at least. We'll have to see how much develop support it has... and its price (which I'm sure will be significantly higher than the gba... the technology costs are why I wouldn't expect Nintendo to release something similar for a couple of years) to see if it gets any wide-spread acceptance.

Thumbs up

GBA chokes on anything 3d. Tapwave's Helix will be able to handle 3d. And digital music and video. Since it's using Palm OS, maybe even some pda functions.

Software support? Look again at Tapwave's key partners page. Notice heavy hitters such as Activision, Infogrammes, and Midway. There will be enough software support for Helix. All it takes is some reasonably good titles or one killer app (such as Tetris on the original gb) and people will be willing to buy it.

GBA targets the childrens' market. Helix is for young adults. I'm not sure they should even be considered competitors because they're going for different customers. Tapwave has found a hole in the market.

As for price, wild guess but anywhere from a low ball price of $99 up to $199. Probably about $150, but I doubt they'd sell much at anything higher than $200.
