I lived in MA for 5 years and got my bachelor degree from UMass Lowell.
I don't see myself ever moving back there, not after I was spoiled rotten by Southern California

How do you feel about the lack of civil liberties and democracy in the UAE? Would you feel safe living there indefinitely? I'm not trying to make things political, but I am curious about your perspective on that.

Democracy, no; it's their country and I would be a guest there.
As to Civil liberties, what do you have in mind?

Ah, so your move would only be temporary? For enjoyment and personal enrichment?

Freedom of speech/assembly and judicial rights (right to due process and a public trial, for instance).

Mostly enjoyment, I expect to take a hit financially if I go through with the temporary move.

Hopefully I won't get into trouble if I'm doing my due diligence and familiarize myself with the local laws.
Plus, I hate to say this, but as a natural-born US citizen I noticed I am treated a whole lot better than other foreigners.

As a safe place to live, it is hard to beat UAE.
Civil liberties etc. not sure what specific one which you are looking for but with the exception of expletives, pornography and other ailments you should be OK to be here.
From financial standpoint, it won’t make much sense for an American to move here as they still need to pay US taxes.

Well they declined to make an exception for me.

Not worried at all. On positive side I got a token annual bonus which I wasn’t eligible for but they gave me anyway. .

Free money is good.

So it seems like my boss in the new company is leaving. Here are my options.

1) Stay quiet and do nothing and continue with the job
2) Pitch myself for that role

Given where I am in my career such golden opportunities are hard to find. I have built great relationship with him but not sure how will he take it if I ask him to recommend me for the role.

Thoughts?

I am in the exact same situation except my boss picked me and asked if I wanted it.

Seems like a no brainer to me unless you don't think you're good at whatever it is you do.

Well my situation might be slightly different. I am the new person on the block. I haven’t even completed my 6 months probation and there might be others vying for the role. Plus they might look externally since I don’t have full EMEA region experience but more MEA region experience.

Also finally, this might come across as me being over zealous about taking on new roles when I haven’t even spent time fixing things in the role I am currently in.

In that case, I get it. That said, I've seen it at least twice when the new guy is the only one that shows interest and wins by virtue of being the only candidate.

Be coy. Ask your boss what it would take for you to get such a job had you been there longer.

We talk about leaving California all the time. Sometimes we discuss going to Texas, Colorado, North Carolina, etc. We NEVER discuss Massachusetts, or anywhere that stays cold through the majority of the year.
