Default Mobile Phone suggestions...

I have a budget of about $400. Definitely can't go higher than that.

I'm looking for a mobile phone that has the following (in order of importance):

1) Quad band GSM (850/900/1800/1900)
2) Doesn't have a **** battery life.
3) Won't break if I put it in my pocket, or look at it wrong. Durable.
4) 3G support (bloody japanese and their 3G-only networks).

I don't need fancy crap, though most 3G phones are in themselves fancy crap. I'm not really interested in playing games, browsing the web, listening to music or taking photos. I just want a phone that you can phone people with, and use it anywhere around the world, within reason.

Any suggestions? I've been reading quite a few reviews, but most modern phones seem to have too much crap and not enough actual phone.

I suggest a Nokia 6500..

Slide:http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_6500_slide-1996.php

Classic: http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_6500_classic-1997.php

Both are good, i'd go for classic, since you want durability.

EDIT: The Nokia 6120 classic is also one for you: http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_6120_classic-1958.php

They are all well within your price range.

You don't need to spend anywhere near $400 if you don't care about web-browsing, and all the extra-crap.

Just buy an el-cheapo quad band phone with 3G support, shouldn't be more than $100 bucks, with no plan. With a plan, you'll probably get one for free.

Why do you need 3G, if you're not downloading anything or browsing?

He said Japan has only 3G networks, so I assume hes going there and will need to use his phone there.

I don't think 3G is needed for talking, it's a data connection-could be wrong.

Anyway, there are plenty of low cost UMTS phones, that are 3G capable, for pretty cheap.

Here's a good sight... all makes and specs. The just search ebay for the best price.

I prefer Nokia, just because they seem to consistently have the best reception, and it sounds like actually you're going to use your cell phone... as a phone.

Your correct, you dont need 3G for voice or text messaging, but accord to what OB said, all the networks in Japan are 3G, so even to make voice calls you would still need a 3G device to be on the networks.

Check the links for the Nokia phones in my first post, I think they're best suited for him.

I was going to suggest the N95 8GB until you mentioned the price, it's $900 AUD from a queensland phone site, they also sell unlocked iPhones. So for your price, how much is the Nokia N73? That would be suitable right?

The N95 is the very definition of extra crap. All he wants is a 3G phone. The N95 is virtually a computer, with a phone option

Hehe.

Yeah GSM arena is probably the only unbiased site with a database of all phones and their specs.

Definetly, besides, the battery life is one of the worst.

I would look at one of the basic Sony Ericsson models. They come in 3G models, are reliable and tend to be fairly robust. Something like the K800i, which I had and loved.

Alternatively, the Nokia 6120 or E51 look fairly robust as well. Not sure how these fit into your budget, the Telstra site I was looking at didn't show prices.

Cheers,
Jez

Exactly, that's why I love it. Who needs a phone, when you can be watching TopGear instead

Thanks for the replies guys.

I did look at the Nokia 6500 classic, but there seems to be issues with crap reception because of its size, and problems with the fagility of the recharger/headphone jack, as well as screen cracking because it's so thin. I'm looking for something a little chunkier.

I'll definitely browse through gsm arena, looks good. Right now I'm looking at just a cheap throw-away motorola that'll do the job whilst I'm bumming around.

Nokia 6120 Classic. It's quite cheap, not too big, uses Symbian S60, etc.

That or the 6133 seems to be my first choice right now. Sony Ericsson W300 being my second.

6133 is a flip right? Might not be as durable as you want it to be.

Not sure about the SE. I'd still stick to the 6120.

I say go with the 6120. The Symbian S60 interface alone makes it the best choice. Have been using S60 phones exclusively for 4 years now (Ah, the good times of the 7650) and there simply isn't a better designed UI out there, period.
