I think it's about the same. I know it's dedicated for workstation high end OpenGL graphics. Stuff like Autocad, 3D studio etc, Plus it has all the hardware 3D functions similar to the 8500. most like it will be twice as expensive. If it FPS in games is what your looking for go with the 8500 if you are going for professional graphics, go with thr FIRE GL. I can remember when the Fire GL used to have the name Diamond before it.

It's a professional OpenGL card. It can display a whopping number of polygons, is thoroghly optimized for OpenGL (no Direct3D) and can have a lot of memory (128MB for starters).

If you are doing professional 3D-modelling or CAD work then you should be interested. As a gamer it has too little bang for the buck.

But we should expect some kick ass OpenGL support for the Radeon line too.

Most normal cards support OpenGL, the drivers for a FireGL card usually are certified and support the Full OpenGL 1.3 spec, and maybe even implement a Superset of other custom extentions etc.

ATI said that all the DX8.1 features of the chipset of this card would be made available to the users by implementing them as OpenGL extentions.

Quite right. Work yes. Gaming no.

Although it could probably run at least OpenGL games quite nicely...
