![]() A friend and I were talking about recommendations for a new system he is building and it got me wondering what mothboards are popular these days. In my friend's case, he is looking at a Ryzen 9 3900x centric build. He isn't the overclocking type, which would lean me towards whatever is the cheapest board from a major manufacturer that supports the features he needs.

![]() MSI B450 Tomahawk Kind of disappointed in the board. Nothing particularly wrong with it. But it was over $100, and it didn't have any new features over the Z170 Skylake board I bought a few years ago that cost less. No Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. One M.2 slot. And the M.2 slot kills off two of the 6 SATA ports. Not many USB ports on the back either. So I had to buy a SATA card to get more ports and use a USB hub. But overall it works fine. Came ready for the Ryzen 3000 series. Even though it has the BIOS flashback feature, I didn't need to use it. |

![]() MSI MPG X570 Gaming Pro Carbon Wifi MSI dropped the ball hard with 1.0.0.3ab and ABBA release timeliness but picked that ball back up and ran with it with 1.0.0.4 bios. Coming from less fancy UEFI bios like what i had on my Z170 board it takes a bit of getting used and felt a right bit overwhelming but I got used to it. Also these might come in handy if you're looking for x570 boards. A bit rambly but good breakdowns of boards from all vendors and price points.

![]() Gigabyte is where its at this gen for AMD, Asus has extremely poor power stages, and MSI dropped the ball on design. Gigabyte went all out on its boards due to the fiasco its had over the past couple of years.

![]() https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuyuS04lD4o I think this cover's the current Ryzen motherboard's pretty good. Depending if your going for 3000-series 12-16 cores you might want to consider the X570 board's because of the buffed-up power stages. MSI seems to be doing good with the Ryzen BIOS'ses and Gigabyte seems to recommended also. Im not sure if there's any bad advice on that video. |

![]() crosshair hero vi with 3700x Gigabyte seems to have been a bit crappy for the last few generations, seems my old asus 370 board has better power output than a lot of gigabytes more recent board. Having said that I have found gigabyte to pretty reliable in the past and this crosshair vi has had some pretty horrendous bios issues in the past(turning off water pumps and fans) nice summary https://www.overclock.net/forum/atta...p;d=1574628785 |

Now I'll agree the 470 series was a joke from Gigabyte.

![]() I have an Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Hero Wifi for my 3900x which is probably overkill but was going round and round in circles trying to choose a suitable board and the Asus ticked all the boxes so decided jut to go with it.

![]() How have the B series boards typically been? Seems like the B550 chipset boards coming next year could be an amazing value. Also wondering if each USB 3 port on the X570 gets its own PCIe lane.

![]() ASRock X570 Taichi. Had Asus C6H WiFi, but RMA'd because of bad power delivery to CPU after upgrading to 3900X. Used it with my former Ryzen 1800X build. |
