![]() Hey folks. I currently have a P2 400 based system and I am going to upgrade to an AMD Thunderbird 1 Ghz CPU or higher. What I need help on is suggestions for the new motherboard. I currently have an AIW 32MB Radeon which I love, and I am worried about compatibility issues (plus I don't know a whole lot about motherboards). I also have 256 MB of newly bought 133 Mhz SDRAM which I want to keep for my new mobo, so going with a DDR Ram mobo is out of the question. I only have $400 to 500 Canadian to play with as well. Anyway, I am really looking forward to your suggestions. Keep up the great work folks! |

![]() The AMD760 Motherboard is the best. This chipset use special settings, which reduce information transfer time (inside the motherboard). AMD have a new agp drivers, which increase video cards power. AMD760 is more stabile then another DDR chipsets. P.S. If you looking for inexpensive motherboard than I suggest Chaintech with 6 chanel audio on board. If you have a lot of money than I think ASUS is especially for you (or Epox with IDE Raid on board) |

![]() Go to newegg.com 1.2ghz tbird ~ $111 abit kt7a raid ~ $135 This is what i have, along with a radeon, and it is great. this board uses pc133 (like what you said you wanted to use). it is also great for overclocking. i must warn you though, anything over 1ghz or so needs some good cooling. these processors get really hot. |

![]() I heartily agree with DigitalOv, avoid VIA. I have built three systems with Abit KA7-100 motherboards (they use the KX133 chipset) and they have been a pain. I am typically a huge fan of Abit motherboards but the VIA chipsets on the KA7-100 are a big minus. USB devices often don't initialize on boot up and have to be unplugged and re-plugged (twice!). VIA keeps releasing drivers but the problems don't go away. The systems just have weird quirks that I haven't seen in other systems I have built. Check out http://bxboards.com and see what they are recommending these days. I think they do a good job of motherboard reviews. |

![]() If you can't change you PC133 to DDR than I have 2 suggestions for you: 1) ASUS A7V133 (with VIA KT133A chipset - ASUS do not produce chipset at all); 2) IWILL KK-266 (with VIA KT133A chipset). This two boards have similar productivity and ROCK stability. Of course VIA have more problems with chipset's compatibility, but VIA try fix all as fast as it possible (fastest whan ALI OR SIS). No doubt that VIA have a best (fastest) non DDR chipset (KT133A not KT133) for AMD processors. I don't recommend ABIT motherboards (isn't so compatible with all devices), but you can buy it too. ![]() I must agree with FilComputerArt! ASUS DO NOT create chipsets. But they create great motherboards. The motherboards recommended by FilComputerArt are at the top of the pack... accept no less for non-DDR AMD Socket A motherboards. But don't just take our word for it... read about it at Anandtech! ![]() http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.html?i=1489 Cheers, ryoken |

![]() I'd also recommend to step back from a VIA board and grab one with AMD760 or AMD 761. Took me blood and sweat to get my system running as it is now. ![]()
