Default HTPC cheap vid card options?

I am running my HTPC off my computer that has a HD4890 in it. The series 4000 doesn't support HD audio streaming. I don't plan on upgrading till at least the fall as it plays everything I need as far as games right now and I will probably get the 6950 at that time. I have a computer that I built for my 6 year old son to use. I have a HD3870 in it. My question is can I plug a HD 5450 in the X4 slot of my son's computer or will it only work in the x16 slot?

It'll work in a PCI-E x4 or x8 slot as long as the card is x16 physically, or is 'open ended'. If it's just a normal x4 slot the card won't fit.

The HD 4000 series supports 2 channel LPCM, the 5 and 6 series support multi-channel LPCM. For a HTPC a 5450 is a good bet, although if you want to add GPU post processing (like noise reduction, deblocking, smoothing, vector deinterlacing, etc.) then a slightly more powerful card like the 5550 is a better bet.

Well thanks for the info. I think I have a normal X4 slot so maybe I'll try cutting the end of the plastic X4 connector so the card fits. LOL I know it sounds archaic but it can be done with a steady hand

I did it once, check for other components sitting behind the slot to make sure there is clearance etc.
