As per usual, LTTP on another big title. Finally started the game recently.

After realizing to enable "exclusive fullscreen" and getting performance issues sorted, I am actually enjoying the game despite not having big expectations since hearing all the disappointed Thief fans that bashed the game.

I don't know, I've only just got through the first chapter but it does feel like a Thief game to me. It also seems incredibly polished, atmospheric, and fun to play. I like the new "swoop" mechanic.

One thing that bothers me though, is how to replay previous chapters. Apparently you need to find the location in the world to activate the chapter again? I'm in the clock tower right now after finishing chapter 1 and I haven't attempted to do it yet, but I kind of want to replay the first chapter to do it different and collect everything.

The problems won't start to occur until you try doing things you could in all other Thief games (Dark Mod included) like mantle any surface, use rope arrows to get around, KO guards without some ridiculous takedown etc.

Aside from those missing things, it's a decent game, it's just not a Thief game, they should have called it something else.

D'oh, yeah I remember now those complaints about it.

I was never a huge Thief fan, so I may not be too bothered by it. We'll see.

Default Wooden Beam Moving Simulator 2014

I don't have much attachment to the original games but this one still managed to disappoint me in various ways. I didn't necessarily dislike it, but it has some glaring faults and questionable design decisions which left me feeling like it was largely wasted potential—unfinished and exceptionally average.

Various annoyances include:

— Lots of repetitive forced animations. Grabbing loot, opening drawers and cabinets (many of which are empty and just waste your time), opening windows, enemy takedowns, etc. There's also that long wooden beam animation they reuse way too many times—sometimes they want you to mash X to move it and sometimes they don't, although unlike the windows (more on those below) these are always used to section off map areas within a map or serve as a transition to a new area.

— There's no indication as to whether or not a window leads to a lootable room within the map you're in, or if it's a transition to another area until after you've already initiated the animation; if you get the prompt to tap X it's a lootable room, if you don't it's a map transition.

— I don't believe the glow on rooms that strictly serve as loot locations goes away after you've cleared them and left, so you might end up going back into an empty room at some point if you don't remember all of the places you've been.

— Somewhat clunky, limited movement. The context sensitive run/jump/mantle function screws up sometimes. There are areas you should be able to get to but can't because the rope arrows only work at specific points. I understand the need to keep you caged to some extent, but there were times where I felt my options where limited when they shouldn't have been.

— Cutscene direction and dialog was a bit stilted, the story felt like it wasn't fully realized and the ending was kind of a mess. The only thing notable about the "Thief-taker General" is his massive bald spot and his penchant for being a douche, other than that he was just a one-dimensional filler character that never amounted to much and got too much screen time.

— Awful audio mixing. Sounds cut off abruptly instead of fading in and out and there are inconsistencies in how loud some sounds are compared to others.

— I understand it's a reboot and they want to do their own thing, but I wish they had kept the Order of the Hammer in as a prominent backstory element. They only ever really indirectly refer to the Hammerites when they reference "The Old Gods" and with the brief appearance of the hammer symbolism in a specific area later in the game, outside of that it's pretty much been taken out of the lore.

— Lastly, and perhaps most egregiously; the guards don't indiscriminately call people taffers.

Thanks RAY, as always I value your opinions.

The game is on the back burner for me at the moment until I can get through a few other games I've been meaning to finish.

I kinda enjoyed the game, but the storyline is definitely not on par with the graphics and is quite unfaithful to the original.
Gameplay mechanics do get quite repetitive, loot is often unsatisfactory, when not inexistent.
I guess at a certain point in the game I just stopped being surprised and went on for pure inertia.
Still installed, no desire to replay it.
Asylum level was probably the most atmospheric and creepy. After that, everything was kind of meh.
The game reeked of unexploited potential to me.

Just completed the game. It was ok, not bad but not great either. I think the biggest problem with the game is the "city" - the implementation reeks of 'lets put in a city for marketing reasons rather than gameplay reasons'.

Traversing the city becomes a tedious exercise, when you just want to get from point A to point B and have to repetitively avoid guards, go through the annoying loading screens, animations (like opening windows) etc just to get to your destination. Over and over again. This would have been greatly alleviated by simply allowing you to fast travel to key locations once you have reached them previously. The amount of time/budget they spent on the 'city' they should have spent on making more levels or expanding the ones currently in the game.

The other complaint I would expect from long time thief fans would be the linearity of the level design, but it didn't bother me as much as there are pros and cons for a tighter gameplay experience. Games which offer stealth as the primary mechanic and not tacked on as an afterthought are rare, so the game was worth playing for fans of the genre. Especially now you can prob find it cheap.

True, I stopped giving a hoot about the city after a first few hours. Then it was take me to the next mission and I don't care about gold anyway since the upgrades are so useless.

Good game for 7-8 hours I played though. Story was intriguing and I actually liked the ending.
