Default AMD 7870/7850 preorders?

Excited to upgrade my 5870...need to speed up my VT102 emulation

Anyone seeing sites for preorder of 7870 cards? Currently nada on Newtesticle and Amazon.
Thanks,
Kat

I ordered MSI 7850. The Gigabyte one went online afterward (975 Mhz stock clock!) but the fans look a bit bulky so I'm not sure if it would fit my case properly anyway. Oh well, there's always CCC and I'm sure either card will overclock similarly.

Now it shows "Out of Stock". Hopefully we got on the list for the first batch.

My motherboard is MSI and I'm very pleased with it so seemed to make sense to get the video card from MSI also.

Anyone looking for a 5870?

You want to go from a 5870 to a 7850?? Whoa it's not worth it ATM. If you really want to, just wait till the price drops otherwise you'll be sorely disappointed with this upgrade.

What about 3870 to 7870

Waiting for the next batch to be available on Newegg, I haven't been this excited about an upgrade (which is long overdue) in a long time.

In regards to the 7850/7870 launch, should I expect the cards to be available at midnight tonight on newegg (if the release date is taken seriously) or will have to check back periodically throughout the day? I feel like in the past that new cards have popped up on Newegg early in the day and are typically sold out by noon.

Crud...what does this mean on Newegg?

DEACTIVATED. This item is currently out of stock and it may or may not be restocked.

Mine shows shipping...but is there something wrong with the card and they stopped shipping or just the production run was pretty low and Newegg has no idea when more will be in stock?

All I'm saying is the 7xxx series is way overpriced at the moment. Unless you really really need a new card just wait a while and the price will invariably drop once Kepler hits the shelves.

Undoubtedly the 7xxx series are a step up architecturally to the 5xxx but just too expensive atm.

Best to wait until there's some competition in the market and the chance of a decent price drop. ATM too expensive for what it brings to the table.

An intersting piece from Hexus.net

"Interesting to note that AMD's partners appear to be holding firm on price, despite the fact that NVIDIA recently slashed the cost of certain GTX 500-series cards. Radeon HD 7870 is good, no doubt about that, but does it warrant the extra outlay when a similar-performance GeForce GTX 570 is available for £220?

It's a tough one, and the lack of HD 7870 stock isn't helping the Radeon's case. Though we were told to expect availability in the week beginning March 19, the likes of Scan, Dabs and Ebuyer currently only have cards up for pre-order."

I usually skip one generation of video card (AKA 6xxx) and spend $350-ish on a new card so the 7870 fits right in.

Besides I think I get at least $120 on gougebay...that will help.

For those with 58xx I would recommend to wait and see what Kleper brings to the table. In any case there will be a drop on pricing.

DJ if you're upgrading from a 3870, a 7850 should be more than enough. I had a 3870, then built a new computer with a cheap 4670 in 2009 (yes, very sad). Over the years the drivers got to the point where the 4670 was roughly on par with the 3870, and I am able to play most games (Crysis 1280x768 medium, NFS Hot Pursuit 1680x1050 medium) and some on max settings 1920x1200 (Portal 2). The 7850, according to specs alone, should be more than 3x faster than than that, so I expect to be able to play all games at 1920x1200 with high settings + AA + AF and have high framerates. Also, I hope to turn Photoshop GPU acceleration to high since the current card seems inadequate.

Just my 2 cents if you're on a tight budget.

Kleper what is that? Is there anti-biotics for that
Seriously...one can always wait for an upgrade since there is always something new "tomorrow'. I don't care if it's AMD, NVIDIA or S3...I pickup whatever is ready at the time I'm ready.

Default HD 7850 is in

Well the results are official. I installed the MSI HD 7850 and am thoroughly impressed. Here are results from the outgoing HD 4670 and the new card. Windows 7 64-bit with latest drivers (8.95.5), Core i7-920, 12GB RAM:

HD 4670
Framebuffer Crysis Warhead Benchmark, DX10, 1920x1200, max settings, 2xAA
Ambush Min: 3.67 Max: 9.34 Avg: 7.12
Avalanche Min: 1.32 Max: 9.91 Avg: 6.78
Frost Min: 3.65 Max: 8.77 Avg: 7.09

In NFS Hot Pursuit @ 1920x1200/max settings the max framerate was 30FPS on an empty stretch. With cars and collisions that came down to ~ 20FPS.

HD 7850 factory clocks (900/1200)
Framebuffer Crysis Warhead Benchmark, DX10, 1920x1200, max settings, 2xAA
Ambush 26.42 Max: 40.93 Avg: 34.16
Avalance 19.94 Max: 47.14 Avg: 34.76
Frost 27.38 Max: 41.36 Avg: 34.68

In NFS Hot Pursuit @ 1920x1200/max settings the framerate is almost always 60FPS (clearly Vsync is forced).

HD 7850 OC (1050/1250)
Framebuffer Crysis Warhead Benchmark, DX10, 1920x1200, max settings, 2xAA
Ambush Min: 29.71 Max: 45.63 Avg: 38.63
Avalanche Min: 22.91 Max: 52.89 Avg: 38.45
Frost Min: 29.10 Max: 46.18 Avg: 38.10

Photoshop hardware acceleration works well also. For example, dynamic zooming with a 16-bit per channel 50 megapixel image is perfectly smooth.

I don't think I'll need to upgrade again anytime soon
