![]() Given the recent thread about the state of the CATALYST driver (which I have 0 problems with) and its perceived relation to the frequency of driver updates I thought this would be a very appropriate poll. How many times would you like to see driver updates from ATI? I have no problems with once a month, but also would have no problems with every two months either.

![]() Considering that (according to ATI) they create a driver build weekly regardless of release schedule, and the only factor in how many releases become publically available is how often a driver is set off for WHQL submission, then I don't see lengthening the time between releases will be of any benefit.

![]() Whenever they feel they have a new driver ready for public use. If that's once a month, fine, but if it takes them two months to get one ready, that's fine too.

![]() I really don't see the need to have more than an official drivers release every 3 months with "real" improvements, solid testing and fixes on issues the drivers seems to cary for a long time. "BUT" with very quick hotfixes for any new game that come out with problems.

![]() Official drivers don't need to be released monthly. I would much rather have up-to-date non-WHQL drivers 'leaked' on a weekly basis than wait each month for official drivers which are already several weeks older than those currently in development. It would also be far more beneficial in terms of feedback. |

![]() I think most driver fixes are only updates. I think what really needs to be addressed is compatibility with dx7-8-9 cards and I think the drivers need to be re-written entirely, similar to opengl. I chose every 3 months so they can concentrate on fixes and less breaking of other drivers. If something needs to be addressed rapidly, then shoot out a hot fix.. This catalyst suite is malarky.

![]() I think once a month is fine. They mostly seem to be bug fixes for games anyway rather than any performance gains. My method is to install the latest ones if there are any fixes for games I might be playing at the time, if there's not I don't bother ('if it ain't broke, don't fix it' right?!!), that is unless I see anybody on this forum raving about performance gains!

![]() every other month would be fine by me, I have not ever had an error in a cat release that I have been waiting with baited breath for the next release to fix. I guess Im not on the cutting edge for gaming etc. |

![]() I selected other, which IMO is, as necessary. There should always be a new driver out to support a new product line, IE, X800 series. Also, after a driver is released, ATI should then take info on: -What new issues came from these new drivers -What previous issues were not corrected with these drivers -What could possibly be affected in any way by changes we plan to introduce in this next driver set -A list of optimizatiosn that we think are realistically obtainable After that, they should work on what they consider to be priorities, and not release a driver set until it's done. If they put "new issiues" as a number one priority, then by fixing ALL of those issues, plus other issues in the enxt release, they'd end up with a net gain. |

![]() I would like to see them "modularize" their dirvers. With 2D Display, MMC, D3D, OpenGL, Cpanel, being seperate plugins. With dynamic downloading of newer "Core modules" as often as driver builds are completed and tested. Even if its once a week. or Twice a day if necessary. The Drivers would work like Anti-Virus software updates. You click on "update" it pulls the latest modules down and you restart your computer if necessary. (course that pretty much hacks the WHQL process right up. But at least game fixes would be really speedy)

![]() Actually taking the "modular" further.. You could have every D3D module plugin released over the last several months on Que. If one works better for a game for you than another then you select the one you want from a list of "available" that you have in your driver cache. The same would work for OpenGL. With mix and matching acording to your games and your needs. Completely on the fly.

You are thinking this becuase of the way the driver builds and packaging are structured now. Which would be different under a complete modular/Plugin build. Think about it. As it is now you can change OpenGL driver like this just by overwrighting the file. The same principle could work perfectly under the proper tree Structure.

NEVER leave ANY decision like this up to a marketing dept. That's like giving a loaded .357 to a four year old. Technical decisions should never be made by marketing. Colors of brochures, names, approximate launch dates, pricing...those are marketing decisions. Bug fixes are not.

![]() I like everything how it is right now... I dont mind them having issues that run into several driver releases, because lest face it, sometimes other issues have to be prioritised... and also, putting up with a little issue (lets say water not rendered properly in some circumstances for example) should not be such a big deal... Don't forget we are on the bleeding edge of technology, and so are nVidia and ATi, so we all learn, and I think its our duty to support whichever company we do to further the cause of technological advancement. Us paying $500 for a graphics card enables those companies to build better, faster, more feature rich cards, that in turn, enables us to play more realistic & fun games ![]()
