Then don't sell on Steam dude. Nobody is forcing them to sell their games on Steam.

Same here with my physical copy for PC (which itself was a pain to install fumbling between 7 DVD's with 15GB more to download!)

EDIT -- Claimed my copy of GTA San Andreas while I was at it (wish it was Vice City instead).

At least the launcher features the ability to move and verify the game so you can always back up the files and copy them back later. I know it had the ability to verify previously but you had to fumble with editing shortcuts. Should at least make it easier to poke around or move it in case something goes down with the drive its on.

Now all they need is the means to locate an existing install and that's the trifecta of recoverability :D

Did they give a warning of this to its players or was it out of the blue? I stopped playing GTAV ages ago.

They better supplement this with some Red Dead action.

Seemed rather sudden and without warning imo.

Ps. Im not arguing steam vs x store etc. I'm just saying read the article, there is WAY more than just taking 30% cut for "nothing". I do wonder if other companies (R*, Bethesda etc) does take traffic into account etc.
It doesn't matter how you try to justify it. Valve has had obscene amounts of money rolling in, and they haven't had to do that much to earn it. The cost of upkeep of Steam is tiny compared to the profits generated. They even brag about having the highest profits per employee of any tech company (frankly, not a smart thing to admit to).

All the other companies have certainly been running cost/benefit on hosting their games directly for years. It's starting to look like Valve didn't play their cards right. They should have priced themselves low enough to prevent other companies from deciding it was worth the hassle to compete with them.

I think people are forgetting, or not realizing, that Steam is more than just a store. For smaller developers, this gives them a multiplayer network, cloud saves, and more. In short, it's also a platform. There is a reason people are complaining about cloud saves and other things missing or being buggy on the "newer" PC game stores.

Yes, Steam/Valve has had a long time to get all these things right but they have.. It will take quite a bit of time for anyone else to catch up on the PC side.

i love that that's the argument against steam, yet epics income is literally them sitting around oon their asses being handed dosh from fortnite. Arguably worse then steam, and what are they doing with it? ****ing over the entire gaming world, not only with exclusives but with the bullshit the publisher ceos have been pushing with the regulation boards too.

Valve also benefits from their Shills and Fanboys defending them to the hilt.

They can do no wrong in their eyes.

Dominant entertainment platforms like Netflix and Steam need to wake up and brace themselves. Other players will always want a piece of the dominant players' pie. It's called competition.

Bring on more launchers!!!!!

So - what do you guys think about the Rockstar Launcher?

Personally it doesn't appear to me to be even trying to compete with Steam. I'd say the same about the Epic Games Store if not for Tim Sweeney's tweets.

Don't forget the work that Steam has done for Linux gaming. They're funding the development of DXVK and some other projects. And they've brought in Proton, which enables Windows games to be run on Linux in one click just like any other game on Steam. You can use your cloud saves to start playing a game on Windows. Pick up right where you left off on Linux. And then go back to Windows if you want. They've even undertaken support for getting these games under Linux so the actually developers don't have to do anything.

Meanwhile Epic Games' CEO mocks Linux on social media.

And the introduction of Rockstar's launcher broke a game that was working under Linux.

Anyone get a code 1 error when attempting to launch gta v via steam? My rockstar game launcher attempts to update, then it errors with the code 1 for social club?

update: was able to find a fix for this in case anyone might have a similar issue. turns out it was the mandatory alsr that is part of windows defender. disabling this allowed the launcher and social club to install and the game to finally run normally. I then simply enabled alsr again and all is well.
